The University of Alaska Fairbanks Department of Geosciences and Geophysical Institute are searching for a new tenure-track Assistant Professor to fill a role broadly in active tectonics with potential emphasis in structural geology, neotectonics, tectonic geomorphology, and/or brittle fault mechanics. The new hire will be a part of the Tectonics and Sedimentation Group at the Geophysical Institute. Teaching duties will include Structural Geology and other courses within the successful applicant’s specialty, as well as rotation into introductory courses as needed. As America’s Arctic University located within the Northern Cordillera, the University of Alaska Fairbanks offers excellent accessibility to a broad range of research interests and potential collaborations.
The new hire will split time between teaching and research, with 50% of time dedicated toward teaching and service (6-8 credit hours per 9-month academic period) and 50% toward research at the Geophysical Institute. The University of Alaska Fairbanks and Geophysical Institute host numerous focused research groups, including the Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO), Alaska Earthquake Center, Tectonics and Sedimentation, Geophysics, geo/thermochronology, and remote sensing. In addition, private (industry) and public (state and federal) entities both have ongoing research efforts throughout Alaska. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to build cross-disciplinary and collaborative research program. The Department of Geosciences is a growing department with strong focus on traditional geology curriculum in addition to the emerging Earth System Science graduate program. Participation in the Department's cap-stone field camp, located in the remote Talkeetna Mountains, is encouraged.
To thrive in this role, the successful candidate must have a demonstrated history of research evidenced by peer-reviewed publications and teaching experience commensurate with their current position. Commitment and experience working with a diverse student population is favorable. Experience with proposal writing and grant management is preferred. A demonstrated ability to collaborate with other scientists in similar or complementary fields is desired.
Minimum Qualifications:
A PhD in Geosciences or a related field is required. Teaching and grant-writing experience is highly desirable, but not required.

This position is located on the Troth Yeddha’ campus in Fairbanks, AK. This is a full-time, 9-month base appointment, FLSA exempt faculty position complete with a competitive salary and full employee benefits package. The Department of Geosciences is composed of numerous faculty, many of which have a research appointment with the Geophysical Institute, supporting BSc, MSc, and PhD degrees in Geosciences, Geophysics, and Sedimentology. Analytical facilities include 1) the Advanced Instrumentation Laboratory (AIL) that hosts EPMA, SEM, FTIR, and XRF, 2) Geochronology Lab containing a new Isotopx NGX noble gas mass spectrometer and associated mineral separations facility, 3) the economic geology lab with a fluid inclusion microscope, and 4) the Palynology lab. Fairbanks, AK is located in the remote and scenic Tanana River valley and is the northernmost University campus in the U.S. In addition, Alaska is a large state with significant critical mineral and oil/gas industry interest. Due to its geographic location, the University of Alaska Fairbanks is ideal for developing a strong Structural geology program with numerous avenues for research.
