The Department of Civil, Geological, and Environmental Engineering (CGEE) at the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) is seeking applications for a tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor in Geological Engineering, beginning Fall 2025. This position involves teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, developing a strong research program, obtaining funding, publishing in peer-reviewed journals, and contributing to departmental service. Candidates must hold a BS in Engineering (preferably Geological Engineering from an ABET-accredited program) and a Ph.D. in Geological Engineering or a closely related field. Post-doctoral research and/or teaching experience in an undergraduate engineering program is highly preferred.
The successful candidate will be expected to create new courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels that complement existing offerings in the department. The department seeks expertise in any area of geological engineering but is particularly interested in candidates with experience in:
Geophysics, GIS, and terrain analysis
Conducting fieldwork with various methods, including geophysical data collection and analysis
Geological engineering in cold and circumpolar/Arctic environments
The CGEE department, part of the UAF College of Engineering and Mines (CEM), offers two ABET-accredited undergraduate programs: Geological Engineering (since 1941) and Civil Engineering (since 1940). The GE program prepares students to mitigate geohazards, manage groundwater, ensure safe construction, and locate mineral resources. The CE program offers concentrations in Structures, Geotechnical, Environmental, Water Resources, Transportation, Arctic Engineering, and Engineering Design & Construction. Collaborative research opportunities are available within CEM, the Alaska Infrastructure Development Center (AIDC), the Institute of Northern Engineering (INE), and other UAF institutes.
This is a tenure-track faculty position focused on teaching, research, and service. Teaching expectations are two courses per semester for a tripartite position including research. A typical contract is 9 months during the fall and spring semesters, with summers off or research funded.
To thrive as a Geological and Environmental Engineering professor, one must excel in balancing high-quality teaching, impactful research, and service to the academic community. Success requires a strong foundation in the core principles of geological and environmental engineering, as well as expertise in areas such as geophysics, GIS, terrain analysis, and Arctic/cold environment engineering. Developing engaging undergraduate and graduate courses, mentoring students, and fostering an inclusive learning environment are key teaching responsibilities. Building a robust research program, securing funding, and publishing findings in peer-reviewed journals are essential for academic growth. Collaboration with interdisciplinary teams and contributing to the advancement of the department and university’s mission will also support professional success in this role.
Minimum Qualifications:
Candidates must have a BS degree in Engineering, preferably in Geological Engineering from an ABET-accredited program, and Ph.D. degree in Geological Engineering, or a closely-related discipline.
