The Snow, Ice, and Permafrost group at UAF's Geophysical Institute is one of the world's leading centers of cryospheric research. We have all realms of the cryosphere on our doorstep, but our group carries out model-, remote sensing-, and field-based research throughout Earth's polar and alpine regions. Members of our group also commonly practice knowledge co-production with members of Arctic communities. Faculty members are responsible for establishing externally funded research programs and expected to collaborate with other faculty members across campus and with other institutions.

The Department of Geosciences offers B.S. degrees in Geosciences and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Earth System Science, Geophysics, and Geoscience. Its unique-in-the-country graduate classes focusing on snow, sea ice, glaciers, and permafrost allow Earth System Science students to earn degrees with a focus on the cryosphere. Mentoring graduate students allows our faculty to develop an effective and productive connection between academics and research.

To thrive in one of these positions, candidates must be self motivated and invested in the academic and professional development of students and early career researchers. They must be able to use their knowledge of one or more domains of the cryosphere to develop a successful externally funded research program and inspire the next generation of researchers. The majority of research carried out by the Snow, Ice, and Permafrost group is highly collaborative, so an ability to work across disciplines and as part of a team will be advantageous. An ideal candidate will have experience working with a diverse student population, an understanding of how to develop compelling research proposals, and a desire to advance the frontiers of cryospheric knowledge.

Minimum Qualifications:

PhD in Geophysics or related field. Some teaching and mentoring at the college level is desirable.
