ANSEP Acceleration Academy Counselor

Come join an award winning program at ANSEP. We are recruiting for an ANSEP Counselor to support our Acceleration Academy programming (grades 9-12).

The ANSEP Counselor provides essential mental health support to students aged 13-19. Daily duties include offering short-term counseling to help students navigate challenges such as grief, trauma, and academic stress, as well as conducting clinical mental health assessments and creating individualized care plans. The role also involves crisis response, providing on-call support during student on-campus weeks, and collaborating with university and program leadership to ensure student safety and well-being. Additionally, the counselor engages with families to provide psychoeducation, supports staff through training on trauma-informed practices, and delivers wellness education to students using experiential learning methods.

To thrive as an ANSEP Counselor, a candidate must be adept at working in high-pressure, crisis situations and possess a strong capacity for providing both direct counseling services and crisis intervention. Success in this role requires the ability to collaborate effectively with a variety of stakeholders, including students, families, faculty, and university departments. The ideal candidate will be skilled in training staff on trauma-informed practices and mentoring them to use culturally responsive approaches. A successful counselor will also be able to develop and facilitate engaging wellness education for students and maintain a positive, safe, and inclusive program climate.

Minimum Qualifications:

Master’s degree in counseling, psychology, social work, or a related field.

An essential requirement is an active Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), PsyD, Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), or Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), approved and licensed in the state of Alaska (license verified upon hire).

The role also requires a minimum of three years of experience in child and family care, or an equivalent combination of training and experience, along with a demonstrated capacity to work effectively in high-pressure, crisis situations. Experience in youth programming settings such as schools, camps, or residential treatment programs is also necessary.

Position Details:

This position is located on the UAA campus in Anchorage. This is a full-time position (however part time-24 hrs/3 days a week may be considered), exempt staff position, complete with both a competitive salary and full employee benefits package. UA provides a generous compensation package that includes retirement options, annual leave, 12 paid holidays per year, tuition waivers for employees and family members, and affordable medical, dental and vision care coverage. New hires will be placed on the UA Staff Salary Schedule, Grade 80, based on education and experience.
