This position is crucial to the safe and productive conduct of academic and research activities carried out at the UAF College of Engineering & Mines (CEM) and Institute of Northern Engineering (INE). CEM is home to six academic departments and several distinct research centers. The college provides facilities and support to ~50 academic faculty, ~15 research faculty, dozens of support staff, and hundreds of undergraduate and graduate students. The college has a rich history of graduating engineers prepared to enter the workforce. CEM is known for the hands-on experiential learning it provides to students as well as the opportunities it provides students to explore and research engineering problems.
The Joseph E. Usibelli Engineering Learning and Innovation Building is a state of the art engineering facility. The six-story, 119,000 square foot facility, features a 48-foot high-bay area for tall projects, a strong floor for testing extremely heavy items, a cold room, and 40 laboratories. The Duckering Building was originally built in 1964 with significant renovations occurring in 2002. The CEM Lab and Facility Operations Manager oversees facility management in both facilities. CEM embraces a collaborative, interdisciplinary work culture. The successful candidate is expected to build a genuine and trusting rapport with faculty and staff. Problems are tackled as a team and success is shared.

Seeking visionary leader to serve as Director of the Institute of Northern Engineering (INE) at the University of Alaska Fairbanks College of Engineering and Mines (CEM). As the research arm of CEM, INE is home to several distinct research centers and provides facilities and support to dozens of researchers working in conjunction with the College. INE’s annual budget is roughly $20 million in research and university expenditures. INE faculty have a rich history contributing to science and engineering specific to the North with continued excellence in water and environmental resources, mining and petroleum development, renewable energy, and infrastructure and transportation in the Arctic and beyond. The Director will support and promote this research by interacting with internal constituencies and external organizations, and by attracting new funding. Duties also will encompass administrative management in personnel and budget areas, including oversight of fiscal operations and research activities of all faculty, staff and students within INE. The Director will facilitate quality research and program growth, recruit research faculty, and coordinate faculty research activities. The intent is to offer a full time 12-month position as a non-represented (FR) faculty appointment. The directorship will support 100% of the position. However, the successful candidate may elect to buy-out a fraction of time using external funds in order to pursue an individual research agenda.

The Department of Civil, Geological, and Environmental Engineering (CGEE) of the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the level of Assistant or Associate Professor in Geotechnical Engineering, with a focus on frozen ground engineering, starting fall 2024. The position requires a strong commitment to teaching, developing a strong research program, publishing in peer-reviewed journals, and performing service. Candidates must have a BS degree in Civil or Geological Engineering (CE/GE), preferably from an ABET-accredited program, and Ph.D. in CE/GE or a closely-related discipline. Prior post-doctoral research and teaching experience in an undergraduate program is preferred. The faculty member is expected to develop new courses at the undergraduate and graduate level and serve students in the CE and GE program.
