Position Summary:

The College of Rural and Community Development, Rural Student Services (RSS) is looking to find the ideal candidate to join our team as a comprehensive academic advisor. This position will focus on working with students who are close to degree completion. We are seeking an organized, energetic, and self-motivated advisor to welcome, support, and advise Alaska Native and rural students, specifically those students returning to complete degree programs through UAF, and to actively support Alaska Native student success.

Our comprehensive approach is unique in recognizing students' efforts to develop and maintain academic and personal balance as they contribute to the cultural richness of the University of Alaska Fairbanks and beyond.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: Passion for higher education and student success. Strong knowledge of University programs, policies and procedures, and campus support services. Demonstrated experience in working with individuals from diverse academic, cultural, and economic backgrounds. Knowledge of Alaska Native cultures. Previous experience working with Alaska Native organizations and an understanding of Alaska Native student experiences, programs, and all related Alaska Native resources available at UAF preferred. Exceptional customer service and interpersonal skills, including active listening skills and a willingness to initiate dialogue. Strong oral and written communication skills. Sound professional judgement and discretion. Excellent computer skills with various software programs to include databases, spreadsheets, and word processing programs (BANNER; Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint; and Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides preferred) and social media platforms. The advisor must be able to work independently and as a member of a larger, collaborative team in a fast-paced environment and complex organizational structure.
Required Experience & Education:

The successful candidate must have a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree and three years of relevant experience or a Master’s degree and one year of relevant experience.

Minimum of one year of experience successfully advising or supporting the academic success of college students of diverse ages, abilities, and cultures.

Salary Information:

This is a full-time, exempt staff position complete with both a competitive salary and full employee benefits package. New hires will be placed on the UA staff salary schedule, Grade 00_79, based on education and experience.
