Position Summary:
Are you a plant ecologist with a passion for working across Alaska’s diverse habitats and regions? The Alaska Center for Conservation Science at University of Alaska Anchorage is hiring a Research Professional 3 Ecologist. The person in this position will develop new research projects; work with a team on existing plant ecology-focused projects, from logistical support of field campaigns, data collection, analysis, interpretation, and publication/presentation; develop geospatial products; manage projects; manage budgets; work with a team to developing new proposals and securing funding; collaborate with federal and state agency partners; and supervise technicians and student hires.

10%Works with other research professionals to develop and submit proposals to secure funding for the ecology program. EssentialEssential
20%Coordinates work with other research professionals and technicians. Works closely with program staff and cooperators at state and federal agencies. May be responsible for leading the work of lower-level professionals, technicians, and students by providing day-to-day guidance, training, and direction, as well as regularly assigning and reviewing work. Responsible for managing budgets and allocating funds to ensure that charges do not exceed available funds. EssentialEssential
30%Composes a diversity of reports based on past, current, and future projects. Duties will include solving complex research questions using advanced research methods and analytical procedures, writing reports for publication, and presenting research results to the general public and scientific community. 40%Leads the collection and analysis of ecological datasets. Job duties include providing logistical support for field campaigns, leading field teams in the collection of ecological data, evaluating ancillary information sources, synthesizing existing information, accurately entering data or overseeing data entry by other staff, analyzing data, developing geospatial products, and supporting vegetation classification work. • Ability to work in remote regions of Alaska and maintain a positive attitude under challenging field conditions.
Technical:
• Ability to develop research protocols.
• Ability to use computerized tools to organize, analyze and interpret information and communicate findings.
• Ability to identify arctic and boreal plant taxa, classify plant communities, and map land cover types.
Budgetary:
• Understanding of budgets to develop proposals, purchase materials, secure services, and manage spending.
Administrative:
• Recruit, hire, coordinate and assign duties to other members of the research team.

| Preferred Experience & Education: |
• Experience in planning and completing field work in remote areas of Alaska.
• Experience with methods of measuring and monitoring plant communities.
• Experience in managing, analyzing, interpreting, and displaying ecological data in both tabular and spatial formats.
• Experience with vegetation classification and land cover mapping.
• Experience with writing reports and grant proposals, as well as managing budgets and supervising technicians in the field or office.

| Required Experience & Education: |
• M.S. or M.A. in biological sciences, botany, or ecology and four years research experience at the postgraduate level in a relevant field, or has an equivalent combination of training and experience.
• Experience with relational databases, statistical analysis, and geographic information systems (GIS).
• Experience writing professional reports or scientific manuscripts.

| Salary Information: |
This is a full-time, term-funded, exempt staff position complete with both a competitive salary and full employee benefits package. New hires will be placed on the UA staff salary schedule, Grade 80, based on education and experience.
