Position Summary:

UAA Anchorage Campus Facilities Maintenance and Operations Department is hiring multiple full-time labor trades and crafts positions with a competitive salary and UA employee benefits package. For this job pool, we are actively recruiting for Heating Ventilation & Air Conditioning (HVAC) CT1, CT2, and CT3 categories. Duties:

CT1: Apprentice Heating Ventilation & Air Conditioning (HVAC) Technician. Performs general position duties. Clean mechanical rooms, pick up trash, wipe down machinery. Attend all regulatory training as required, and maintain up-to-date documentation. Developing competencies across HVAC systems as well as computer proficiencies required by the job including: regularly performing workflow and status updates in the integrated work management system, Performs as an assistant on larger projects. May assist with simple tasks including installing fan filters, lubricating, changing belts, and installing minor repair products as needed.Essential
CT2: Journeyman HVAC Technician. Performs and is versed in CT1 HVAC requirements. Duties for this position include performing routine and periodic maintenance to HVAC system fans from ¼ to 125 HP. Cycle all units, replace belts, grease pulleys, change out motors, replace bearings, and/or shafts, repair leaks, monitor readings, replace primary and secondary filters, replenish fluids and use specialized meters and gauges to adjust equipment. Calibrate digital and pneumatic controls. Perform repair and service on exhaust fan units. Change out impellers, bushings, bearings, seals, and perform maintenance on a regular basis to verify operation of all building pumps. Replace belts and filters, perform routine and preventive maintenance and verify operation of all building compressors. Respond to hot and cold calls, adjust and calibrate thermostats, dampers and / or VAV boxes for proper temperature and air flow.Essential
CT3: Master Level HVAC Technician. Performs and is versed in CT2 HVAC Technician. Duties for this position include proficiency in troubleshooting and repairing electronic and electrical system components on HVAC equipment; calibrate, repair and replace combustion controls on natural gas fired hydronic boilers and direct fired RTU’s. Performs technical analysis of building plans and working drawings to determine work aids required and optimize sequence of installation in maintenance and construction projects and operations.Essential

Interpersonal Skills: Ability to work independently and in a group setting including following, interpreting, and communicating instructions given by management; relating to management and other employees in a positive manner, making efforts to solve crew conflicts, and assisting in providing a productive and safe work environment.

Mathematical Skills: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as pressures, frequency, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to define problems (troubleshoot and identification of root cause), collect data, (research the product, review as-builts, review O&M data, and other online resources), establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

Computer Proficiency: Capability to use computers for email, word processing, and creating bid estimates. Proficiency in computerized maintenance management systems and other software systems as required by the individual job requirements. Be computer proficient utilizing Microsoft software (i.e. Word, Powerpoint, Excel, Access and Outlook) as well as the Google platform. Possess and demonstrate good organizational and communication skills.

Building codes, regulations, and safety standards: familiarity and working knowledge of codes and standards related to the applicable trade industry. Including but not limited to: AKOSHA, plumbing code, and ASRHAE standards.

CT1: In addition to the general KSAs, CT1 must have skills and knowledge in the mechanical maintenance of plumbing, heating, and ventilation. Familiarity with Building Automation Systems (BAS) to include Apogee and Desigo.

CT2: In addition to the CT1 requirements, must have substantial knowledge in the installation, repair and maintenance of plumbing related systems; possess knowledge and skills to install, operate, maintain, and repair hydronic systems, boilers, humidification systems and cooling systems. Must have substantial knowledge in the installation, repair and maintenance of plumbing related systems; possess knowledge and skills to install, operate, maintain, and repair hydronic systems, boilers, humidification systems and cooling systems. Working knowledge of Apogee and Desigo BAS to operate and troubleshoot building control systems and to verify status of alarm systems.

CT3: In addition to the CT2 requirements, must have master level knowledge of heavy commercial and industrial HVAC related systems. Have the knowledge and ability to comprehend blueprints and schematics. Candidates must have full competency of computerized building automation and pneumatic control systems to operate and troubleshoot building control systems and to verify status of alarm systems.
Preferred Experience & Education:
CT1- Assistant HVAC Technician - apprentice level and/or 3 years of training or experience in HVAC/Plumbing maintenance or as a laborer in mechanical construction or related field. Needs apprentice level or other equivalent certification with a minimum of three years related experience and/or training.

CT2- HVAC Technician will have journeyman level or equivalent certification or a minimum of 10 years related experience and/or training. Candidates who qualify for the interview will complete a CT2 competency test.

CT3- Master Level HVAC Technician will have master level or equivalent certification or a minimum of 15 years related experience and/or training. Candidates who qualify for the interview will complete a CT3 competency test.
Maintains all required certifications.
 
Preferred knowledge/experience/education/certification: 3rd class boiler operator license, Siemens control training, humidification and refrigeration experience, building automation certification, fire alarm and electrical systems experience, journeyman plumbers certification, refrigeration certification or training, welding certification and fabrication experience.
Required Experience & Education:

General: All positions require a High School Diploma or equivalent and a valid Alaska drivers license with a clean driving record, meeting University of Alaska safe driving standards. As part of the required University background check - UAA will obtain a driving history record from DMV to confirm candidates meet the UAA safe driving standards. Driver license info: Within your cover letter please state whether or not you have or can obtain a valid Driver’s License upon hire.

CT1 - Three years of experience with industrial tools and/or hand tools related to the trades. Preferred knowledge of building mechanical systems and maintenance of building systems.

CT2- HVAC Technician - Must meet CT1 requirements and have commercial or industrial experience. Preference for certifications in one or more of the following:
Preferred knowledge/experience/education/certification: 4th class boiler operator license, Siemens control training, humidification and refrigeration knowledge, building automation certification, fire alarm and electrical systems experience, journeyman plumbers certification, welding and fabrication experience.

CT3- Master Level HVAC Technician must meet CT2 requirements and have master level experience in commercial facilities.


Salary Information:

Position Tiers start at the following: CT1 /Step 1 $23.48/hr.; CT2 /Step 1 $26.41/hr.; CT3 /Step 1 $29.74/hr.; (See Article 9.2 in the L6070 Collective Bargaining Agreement, Wage Grade Schedule - http://www.alaska.edu/labor/local-6070/ ).
