The UAF Center for Student Engagement is seeking a team-focused, creative individual to join our programming team as the Student Activities & Orientation Coordinator. This position reports directly to the Associate Director and serves a critical role in the enrollment management strategy and retention efforts for the university. The Student Activities & Orientation Coordinator plans and oversees fall and spring New Student Orientation, large scale campus events for students, Nanook Traditions, and other student-focused events.
Use student development and learning theories to develop and administer social, cultural, multicultural, intellectual, spiritual, and recreational programs that promote the learning, development, and growth of students.
ORIENTATION: Develop and implement the spring and fall New Student Orientation program to facilitate the transition of new students and parents to UAF, and prepare students for UAF's educational opportunities, student responsibilities, and student life opportunities. This includes traditional new student orientations, parent orientations, transfer student orientations, online family network, and online pre-orientations.
Create programs that initiate the integration of new students in the intellectual, cultural, and social climate of UAF, organize presenters, facilities reservations, catering, staffing, purchasing, program delivery, and manage orientation database. Work with the office of Admissions to promote orientation to incoming students.
Be an active member of NODA and NASPA to learn best practices in Orientation.
STUDENT ACTIVITIES: Advise the Nanook Traditions programming board; responsible for the enhancement and maintenance of UAF’s oldest traditions: Starvation Gulch, Winter Carnival, SpringFest. Collaborate with other campus departments to keep traditions robust. Recruit students from key departments and from the general student population.
Supervise the student staff on event planning and execution. This includes Welcome Week during orientation, movies/documentary series, comedy shows, art shows/receptions, book clubs, open mics, cultural events, alcohol alternative events, and other programming.
Supervise SAO staff in recruiting student art shows and other exhibits for the coffeeshop. Provide quality coffeehouse-style programming (open mics, poetry, etc).Essential
Recruit, hire, train, evaluate and supervise the student activities office staff (4-5 students), Nanook Traditions Board (8-10 student volunteers), and 25+ Orientation leaders.Essential
3-1010% BUDGET & ADMINISTRATION:
Direct the fiscal operations of the Student Activities Office, Nanook Traditions, and New Student Orientation. Complete monthly management reports, forecast expenditures, and revenue.
Use effective and innovative marketing strategies to engage students. Advise student staff on marketing their programs. Maintain social media and other web areas.
Stay current in trends and best practices in student affairs. Be an active and contributing member of the Center for Student Engagement programming team.
Create and conduct a data-driven assessment of events and programs. Assess and update the programs annually using student development theory and best practices.Essential

-Must work some nights and weekends for staff events as required or needed.
-2-3 years of experience in event planning at a University or College, preferably with a focus on Orientation or Student Life events.
-Experience in budget management
-Experience with marketing
-Experience in planning, directing, and coordinating programs and activities
-Experience working with people in a student-centered setting
-Experience in student affairs administration
-Experience in contract negotiations and working with agents and talent
|Required Education or Training:
-Required: Bachelors required in a related field
-Preferred: Master's degree in student affairs/ equivalent
This is a full-time, exempt staff position complete with both a competitive salary and full employee benefits package. New hires will be placed on the UA staff salary schedule, Grade 79, based on education and experience.
