Position Summary:

In partnership with the Chief Human Resources Officer and leadership at each of the universities, this position focuses on the implementation of institutional plans and practices to improve participation and outcomes for Alaska Native and Indigenous students, faculty and staff in concert with university administrators across the University of Alaska (UA) System and works to strengthen relationships between UA and Alaska Native partners. The Senior Director will help to guide and support the implementation of the Alaska Native Success Initiative Strategic Plan. The plan is focused on transformation, commits to implementing system wide initiatives like training and messaging, and supports each university in implementation of their plans. The Senior Director will focus on institutional practices, supporting the Alaska Native Success Initiative (ANSI) action teams at each of the universities, and building stronger relationships between university leadership and our Alaska Native partners. This position can be located at any of the university of Alaska campuses.


1-50Leadership Responsible for strategic and democratic leadership that focuses on growth and success of the individual universities through the Alaska Native Success Initiative (ANSI) leads, Advises the president and UA’s leadership team on Alaska Native success, anti-racism, justice, equity, diversity and inclusion strategies. Help build stronger relationships between the UA system office, university leadership and programs with Alaska Native organizations and communities across the state, focusing on high workforce demand program areas (health care, accounting, aviation, etc.) and various Alaska Native support services. Serve as the primary liaison between the system office and the Alaska Federation of Natives, Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (ANCSA) regional corporations and ANCSA foundation partners. Liaise between leadership and the universities Represent UA system office and the Alaska Commission on Postsecondary Education and the AlaskaCAN network. Lead the transition of ANSI from the development to core University principle. Including but not limited to creation of a fellowship opportunity for students, creating policies and procedures that outline how the UA will operate under this program, etc. Serves as a member of the UA President’s leadership team. This includes attending all meetings and offering feedback as requested.Essential
25Analysis and Strategy Identify path to integrate ANSI training with existing UA training resources, including the use of existing materials produced by statewide partners. Rollout new training program ideas with UA System Office involvement. Monitor assessment tool/s that demonstrate change related to Alaska Native success, anti-racism, justice, equity, diversity and inclusion throughout the UA system. On behalf of the president, engage with the Alaska Native Studies Council, UA for Racial Justice, and other university affiliated groups to develop strategies for progress. Conduct an analysis of underrepresented populations who do not see post-secondary education as part of their plans. Gain understanding of recruitment efforts employed by UA’s universities and identify additional models that might work for UA. Support and engage with ANSI university leads through regular communication, with special emphasis on the strategies that are being employed to improve student experience and student retention. Develop and present a pathway to career growth for Alaska Native staff and faculty . Create Presentation Talks to discuss this.Essential
3-10Policies and Procedures Review and assess current practices and policies, and analyze the identify which areas system wide that actions support or hinder UA's diversity goals. Represent the university system office with partners across the state to advance recruitment and retention of students from underrepresented communities, including a focus on FAFSA completion rates. Gain understanding of existing efforts at each university to assure alignment.Essential
4-10Annual Report Coordinate & lead the creation of the Alaska Native Success system-wide comprehensive annual report to the Board of Regents and Alaska Federation of Natives. Maintain knowledge of diversity-related issues, legislation and best practices. Build a team of part-time highly functioning fellows that would align ANSI.Essential

Office Location and Travel:

This position is located in Anchorage, Fairbanks or Juneau, or UA community campus location. Frequent travel to other local and out of state business sites, conferences and meetings may be required.

  • Strong computer skills with a high proficiency with the Google Suite and FoxIt products; willingness to learn new programs and software.

Typical Experience:
  • In-depth knowledge of and demonstrated experience working with Alaska Native organizations and/or communities.
  • An in-depth understanding of key issues, challenges and opportunities related to Alaska
  • Native/American Indians and post-secondary education.
  • Proven track record of advocacy and organizing skills to help coordinate across dynamic statewide Alaska Native organizations.
  • Understanding of higher education governance structures or interest and ability to learn.
  • Strong technical writing and presentation skills preferred.
  • Equivalent experience and skills may be substituted for the bachelor’s degree and other requirements as deemed appropriate to fulfill the requirements of this role.
  • Must have manual dexterity to operate computer keyboard and standard office equipment.
Required Education or Training:

Bachelor’s degree in relevant fields for the role is required as well as a minimum of 5 years of experience in project management, program creation and implementation, administrative, general coordination and team-based projects is necessary.

Salary Information:

This is a full-time, 12-month, exempt staff position complete with both a competitive salary and full employee benefits package. New hires will be placed on the UA staff salary schedule, Grade 83, based on education and experience.
