Position Summary:

The University of Alaska Southeast (UAS) is seeking a faculty member for the Health Information Management (HIM) Program. The HIM Program was recently re-accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management (CAHIIM) in October of 2021 with no conditions. We are the only Alaska accredited program for health information management. Come join this exciting program and great team at UAS. The position is a full-time, tenure track position located in Alaska. The expected start date is August 2023. Applicants who have advanced through the screening process will be asked to give a 15-20 minute public presentation on an HIM-related topic.


100Faculty member will be responsible for undergraduate teaching, advising, and recruiting activities within the University of Alaska Southeast Associate of Applied Science degree in Health Information Management. Teaching responsibilities will be primarily web-based synchronous course delivery, plus face-to-face non-credit professional development training as demand warrants. Support University of Alaska bipartite mission of performing teaching, public service and university service. Teach undergraduate online courses using various delivery techniques. Candidates must be able to teach, in a manner consistent with the specific course content description, in two or more of the following course areas: coding, legal, management, healthcare information technology, or billing and reimbursement. Faculty is expected to hold office hours appropriate for the course(s) being taught. Mentor and advise students. Be proactive in modifying and developing curriculum.Essential
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: Required
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills to communicate with faculty, staff, students, and community members.
- Demonstrated proficiency using computer applications, online resources, and other technologies for the classroom.
- Excellent organizational skills to be effective in managing short term and long term tasks.
- Ability to work independently, exercise good judgment in analyzing situations, making decisions, and problem solving.
- Ability to work under pressure with frequent changes.

- Knowledge of and an ability to integrate instructional strategies and technologies in an online classroom.
Typical Experience:
- Two years full-time or equivalent in a healthcare/office setting.
- Experience teaching college level coursework and/or on the job training/supervising in a healthcare environment.
- Experience working with a diverse staff or teaching nontraditional, ethnically diverse, or underprepared students.

- Post-secondary instruction and course administration experience as the instructor of record, teaching HIM courses or health information technology courses or career training, continuing education or professional development training experience.
- Experience interpreting students’ needs to produce effective instructional, interactive, course materials.
- Experience in health information technology, information security, database or system administration, or related field.
- Experience teaching blended, hybrid or fully online courses in a higher education environment.
- Experience working with electronic health records.
- Professional experience in a management-related position in the healthcare industry.
Required Education or Training:

- Credentialed as a Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or other AHIMA credential.
- Baccalaureate degree or commit to obtaining a Baccalaureate degree in related area (health information, health services administration, business, computer science, education, or other health-related area) within two years.

- Master's degree in related area (health information, health services administration, business, computer science, education, or other health-related area).
- Information technology or database related certifications.

Salary Information:

This is a 9-month, tenure-track faculty appointment located in Alaska, with a competitive salary and an excellent benefits package.
