Position Summary:

Housed in the Natural Sciences Building, UAA’s psychology department features a live animal lab with hamsters and rats. By providing humane care to the animals, this position helps support faculty conduct safe and humane animal research related to current community and global issues, from age-related cognitive decline and binge drinking to weight gain and obesity.


100Provide humane care for live animal colony. Preliminary rat/hamster handling. Maintain the cleanliness of the animal colony. Clean the housing units. Feed the rats/hamsters. Keep a written record of work. Rat/hamster euthanasia. Maintain cleanliness of main lab area. Maintain operant conditioning chambers and other lab equipment.Essential
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: Ability to humanely care for live rats and hamsters to include cleaning, feeding, monitoring, and handling. Must be dependable and able to reliably care for live animals on a daily basis, including weekends and holidays.
Typical Experience:
Prior experience caring for or working with live animals is preferred.
Required Education or Training:

To be eligible for student employment, an applicant must:

A) Be enrolled in the University of Alaska system with a minimum of six credit hours in the current semester of employment; OR

B) Have been enrolled the preceding semester for six or more credit hours and demonstrate plans to enroll for six or more credit hours in the next semester for employment between semesters; and

C) Have at least a 2.0 cumulative grade point average (GPA) or is a newly enrolled student.

Salary Information:

This is a Student Assistant 1 position with a minimum pay of $10.34 per hour for up to 20 hours per week.
