Position Summary:

The Communications Manager undertakes a variety of communications, reporting, and writing-related tasks for the Alaska National Science Foundation (NSF) EPSCoR program. They write, edit and design newsletters and other outreach materials; maintain the project website; create content for social media accounts; and oversee a team that creates audiovisual materials. They develop and compile information for the NSF, including annual and final reports, Site Visits, responses to recommendations, external evaluations, and other complex reporting requirements. They compile information for, edit and write narrative portions of grant proposals for the NSF. They develop and manage Alaska EPSCoR communications strategy and policy to identify, inform, and influence target audiences. Job duties are often complimentary and the percentage of time spent on different tasks varies throughout the year. This position is located on the Fairbanks campus and combines onsite and remote work with occasional work-related travel.

Duties:

1-35Communications and Outreach: Originate content and lead the development of programmatic communication. Establish, organize, design, write, photograph, edit, lay out, and disseminate a comprehensive suite of materials including Alaska Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) internal and external newsletters, brochures, flyers, website, social media, and other publicity and outreach materials. Coordinate intrastate travel of communication and outreach personnel who will document project efforts. Oversee the EPSCoR data visualization team including leading the coordination, production, and dissemination of audiovisual materials. Research and stay informed about the appropriate permissions for photography and filming. Supervise the student intern positions working with the data visualization team. Create and edit internal and external EPSCoR correspondence and documentation. Create and deliver presentations for the public on EPSCoR efforts. Serve as an expert resource on technical writing as well as composition and editing of both reporting documents and public communication documents. Speak on behalf of EPSCoR in response to requests from agencies, media, lobbyists, and the public.Essential
2-30Reporting and Data Maintenance: Assist in the strategic planning process for the program. Develop and compile information for National Science Foundation (NSF) annual and final reports, NSF Site Visits, responses to recommendations, external evaluations, and other complex NSF reporting requirements. Develop strong working relationships with the leadership team and researchers to ensure thorough and timely internal communication. Generate and maintain databases of project information and compile data from sources including Banner and UA Institutional Research.Essential
3-20Partnerships and Collaboration: Develop and manage Alaska EPSCoR communications strategy and policy to identify, inform, and influence target audiences. Identify and develop products, platforms, and strategies for future communication. Establish and implement content and design for communications program and short- and long-term communications plans, with input from supervisor and EPSCoR research team. Develop and maintain contacts with science communicators and with communications and outreach departments across the UA system to extend reach and to share and implement best practices.Essential
4-15Management and Technical Writing: Compile information for, edit and write narrative portions of grant proposals for the NSF. Review proposal-preparation practices from web-based sources and UA colleagues. Develop and track the communications team budget. Work with fellow employees and supervisors to identify, assess, and critique appropriate research and structural themes and strategies, as well as commonalities among successful grant applications. Organize, edit and elaborate upon grant materials from multiple sources to construct successful grant applications. Support the Alaska EPSCoR office through various duties, such as large conference organization support; day-to-day office management of complex communication strategy; process improvement; etc.Essential
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
  • Ability to communicate complex ideas about science to multiple and diverse audiences, in writing and orally, through design, photography, and videography.
  • Ability to analyze complex situations and make responsible, independent decisions.
  • Ability to synthesize large amounts of written material and interpret and apply complex policies, rules, and regulations.
  • Ability to establish and maintain productive working relationships with individuals and groups and to work effectively both independently and as a member of a team.
  • Ability to develop and implement policy regarding communications.
  • Ability to develop and track the communications team budget.
  • Knowledge of science and communications theory and applications in research.
  • Knowledge of university and federal rules and regulations relating to grant applications and grant-funded activities.
  • Ability to provide advice and guidance in technical areas including writing, graphic, and website design.
  • High-level skills in writing, photography, editing, and graphic design. Website design and maintenance skills.
  • Proficiency with software programs such as Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Creative Suite or equivalent design and layout packages. Familiarity with OUCampus content management system.
  • Experience with audio/visual communication
  • Proven ability to work with audiovisual equipment including audio recorders, SLR cameras, video cameras, and UAVs.
Typical Experience:
Bachelor’s Degree in a writing or communications-related field with three or more years of progressively responsible experience in communicating science to the public.
Required Education or Training:

Bachelor's Degree in a writing- or communications-related field with three or more years of progressively responsible experience in communicating science to the public. College-level education in science.
Master’s degree in a writing- or communications-related field preferred.

Salary Information:

This is a full-time, 12-month, exempt staff position complete with both a competitive salary and full employee benefits package. New hires will be placed on the UA staff salary schedule, Grade 80, based on education and experience.
