Position Summary:

The Facilities Services Division of Design and Construction is looking for an Engineering Assistant! Engineering Assistants fill a critical role at Facilities Services Division of Design and Construction, within project management teams. These are entry level positions. New engineers will be provided with conscious mentoring and gain a well-rounded background in design, management and communication. Must have a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or Architecture, some work experience in entry level engineering position or appropriate graduate level study.

Duties:

10Apply standard engineering practices and techniques in specific situations, adjust and correlate data, recognize discrepancies in results, and follow operations through a series of related detailed steps or processes.Essential
10Create and utilize computer software to assemble, monitor, and log analysis, processes and to calculate model studies.Essential
15Interface with UAF departments to coordinate construction activities.Essential
15Review consultant design documents for consistent and clear definition.Essential
20Under the direction of an experienced engineer or architect, use prescribed methods to perform design services to prepare construction documents for UAF projects.Essential
25Provide engineering and construction support to promote quality design and construction of facilities by applying engineering principles. Observe, inspect and monitor construction projects at UAF.Essential
5Research code issues, inspect facilities, and recommend code compliant solutions.Essential

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

1. Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) such as AutoCAD and ArcGIS.
2. Engineering or Architectural Principles
3. Construction methods: Construction scheduling, cost estimating and materials of construction
4. Computer Software proficiency (Word processing, databases & spreadsheets.)

Ability to work independently with minimum supervision and to manage building programs that meet University goals and objectives. Ability to interact effectively with faculty, staff, students, government officials, and the general public.

Familiarity and experience using facility life Safety codes: IBC, UPC, NEC, IFC, IMC, ASME,
EPA Storm Water regulations, complex contract documents. OSHA Standards
Construction quality control experience
Engineering or Architectural design experience

TYPICAL EXPERIENCE:

Some work experience acquired in an entry-level engineering position or appropriate graduate level study.

REQUIRED EDUCATION OR TRAINING:

Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or Architecture and successful completion of Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam within six months of employment. (The FE exam requirement does not apply to architects.) Valid drivers license.

Term Position: This position is a term-funded position and is reviewed annually for contract renewal at the University's discretion.

Probationary: Pursuant to University Regulation 04.07.020, new employees of the University are employed in an at-will probationary status for the first six months of employment.   During the probationary period, employment may be terminated for no reason or any reason.  Promoted employees also serve a probationary period with limited rights of retreat.
