We are currently accepting applications for licensed temporary marine engineering positions including 2nd Assistant Engineer, and 3rd Assistant Engineer.
Duties:
*The 2AE primarily assists in the maintenance, repair and operation of vessel fuel systems, compressed air systems, oil fired water heating systems, incinerator maintenance, fresh water cooling & heating loop systems, as well as watch-standing or otherwise as directed. Other duties and responsibilities of this position include: Record pertinent & required data records in the official engine room log and in the continuous machinery management system database including work performed and inventory updates; have effective knowledge of the Engine Room Standard Operating Procedures plan and can follow the instructions of the plan; Monitors machinery and auxiliary systems & equipment throughout the vessel with an eye toward early identification of problems; Assist with loading of fuel & lube oil onto the vessel in accordance with the vessel fueling plan; Assist with maintaining the vessel machinery & systems and reporting abnormalities; Perform routine maintenance of machinery and systems; Help diagnose malfunctions and provide recommendations on course of action to the supervising Engineer; Assist with maintaining & ensuring the cleanliness of vessel engine room and other machinery spaces.Essential
*The 3AE, under the direction of the Chief Engineer/1st Asst. Eng. will assist in the operation, maintenance and repair of the vessel's propulsion system and its many auxiliary systems aboard a global-class, ice-capable, unlimited tonnage oceanographic research vessel of the UNOLS fleet. The 3AE will primarily assist in the maintenance, repair and operation of vessel water systems, bilge systems, lube and waste oil systems, deck boats maintenance, sewage and greywater treatment systems, as well as watch-standing or otherwise as directed. Assist with maintaining the vessel machinery & systems and reporting abnormalities.Essential
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:
All marine engineering positions require strong mechanical problem solving skills. Ability to be at sea for extended periods. Operational understanding of fuel oil bunkering procedures and emergency response, safe usage of basic machine and hand tools, basic math and computer skills. Knowledge of basic good seamanship practices (knots, line-handling, general shipboard maintenance and care, preparation/preservation of steel surfaces, operation of deck equipment, winches, etc). Ability to work with a diverse group of people including scientists, ship's crew and technicians.
TYPICAL EXPERIENCE:
3AE - Adequate experience to have the required level of MMC. Preferred: Prefer experience on newer vessel propulsion systems and equipment. Mechanical operational and maintenance decisions, as required to safely and efficiently operate modern marine mechanical systems and equipment.
2AE - Basic operational understanding and experience working with shipboard systems, understanding of shipboard electrical systems, basic machine & hand tool safe use; basic math and computer skills. Preferred: Prefer experience on newer vessel propulsion systems and equipment. Mechanical operational and maintenance decisions, as required to safely and efficiently operate modern marine mechanical systems and equipment.
REQUIRED EDUCATION OR TRAINING:
Qualified applicants must possess the following documents: Merchant Mariners Credential with endorsements of 3rd Assistant Engineer or 2nd Assistant Engineer and Officer in Charge of an Engineering Watch. USCG Health Certificate, U.S. Passport, TWIC, and Driver's License.

Salary Information:
This is a temporary position (grade 78 for 3AE, grade 79 for 2AE), step placement DOE. Pay also includes cruise leave cash out upon completion of contract. Flexible scheduling and sailing bonuses available.

Applicants will be required to provide documentation of participation in random drug testing program for at least 60 of the preceding 185 days, did not have any positive test results, and did not refuse to take a required test. Testing will be in accordance with the Department of Transportation Program and testing shall be in accordance with United States Coast Guard Drug and Alcohol Testing guidelines outlined in the Federal Register 46 C.F.R. 4, 5, and 16.
