Position Summary:

UAF's Community and Technical College is seeking an energetic Child Care Teacher Assistant / Program Aide for our Bunnell House Early Childhood Lab School. The successful candidate must be able to lift or move up to 50 lbs, have good vision and hearing as mandated to meet all childcare regulatory and licensing requirements and have current infant-child-adult first aid and CPR certification. This is a temporary position. Schedules are on-call and flexible.


100Teacher Assistant: Position works in conjunction with lead teacher planning and implementing model developmental programs. Position assists in the implementation of the program plan and provides the daily care, education and supervision of children in an assigned area. Provides an environment of acceptance in which children can grow with positive self-concept. Observes, records, and reports individual and group behavior in an accurate and timely manner. Assists in the care and supervision of children, including changing, toileting, feeding, nap time, and playground supervision. Safety/Health: Establishes and maintains a well-organized, safe, healthy environment for children. Checks materials, equipment and supplies to see that amounts are adequate and in good repair. Takes preventive measures against hazards to physical safety. Identifies unusual behavior or symptoms which may indicate need for health care. Supervises and plans for sanitary, social and positive meal times for children. Children/Families: Recognizes and supports the diverse needs of student, staff and faculty families using the UAF Community & Technical College Early Childhood lab services. Establishes positive, supportive, professional relationships with each family. Participates in the registration of students for the school year and summer program as well as other special activities. Familiarizes new families with enrollment procedures to include understanding and complying with all policies. Establishes good communications with parents in daily conferences that facilitate the free flow of information about their child.Essential

The successful candidate will work in conjunction with a Lead Teacher planning and implementing model developmental programs. They will assist in the implementation of the program plan and provide the daily care, education, and supervision of children in an assigned area; observe, record, and report individual and group behavior in an accurate and timely manner; assist in the care and supervision of children, including changing, toileting, feeding, nap time, and playground supervision; and assist in providing an environment of acceptance in which children can grow with positive self-concept. 

Minimum qualifications: 

  • Infant-child-adult first aid and CPR certification is required.  
  • Must be willing to authorize and successfully pass a personal and criminal background check and meet all requirements specified by licensing regulations.  
  • High school graduate or equivalent, plus some vocational technical course work in early childhood education or a related field and formal experience working with age appropriate preschool children.
  • Three months experience working with age-appropriate pre-school children, at minimum.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Customer service skills.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Experience working with children and diverse families. General working knowledge and experience with young children in a group setting, child development curriculum, classroom teaching techniques, psychology and sociology of families. The ability to ensure a safe, healthy learning environment and a developmentally appropriate program that encourages productive relationships with UAF students, lab school staff and families. Ability to complete and maintain accurate reports (i.e., attendance, meals, incidents, accidents, etc.). Must have an understanding and working knowledge of health and safety regulations and procedures, national accreditation practices, licensing standards. Must have demonstrable interpersonal and communication skills.

Physical Requirements:  In addition to being able to lift or move up to 50 lbs, the successful candidate must also have good vision and hearing as mandated to meet all childcare regulatory and licensing requirements.
