Position Summary:

As our Senior HR Business Partner (Sr. HRBP), you’ll help University of Alaska HR by serving as a functional expert, liaison, talent advisor, labor and employee engagement consultant and point of contact for leadership at each campus of the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF). In this role, we’ll rely on you to explore innovative opportunities to improve system-wide business results, look for opportunities to enhance the organizational culture, and facilitate issue resolution. The Sr. HRBP will proactively engage with program leadership to positively impact the campus environment by identifying resources and formulating/presenting actionable recommendations/options for leadership consideration. This position listens to leadership at each UAF campus to ensure high-quality talent acquisition, employee transitions and benefits, labor and employee engagement, operations (accounting, HR systems, and customer service) and organizational development.


10● Support employees and supervisors for UAF employee onboarding to include, but not limited to: employee documentation and access needs, orientation, awareness and guidance for completing initial or required university training programs, effectively navigating the UAF structure including familiarity with UAF or UA HR resources ● Provide and participate in UAF training programs for employee developmentEssential
20● Lead HR work teams and/or serve as an expert advisor within all areas of HR that have a system wide impact: ● Collaborate with and advise leadership within Human Resources and the university to develop and implement standardized processes to increase efficiencies and productivity. ● Work with Human Resource Coordinators (HRCs) at UAF to discover and assess project objectives, analyze the value of proposed projects, and make decisions on issues. Determine the scope and complexity of a project through ongoing analysis and apply the appropriate level of project management oversight. ● Take a leadership role with specialized areas in developing policies and practices, and new approaches to problems encountered, establish short and long-range planning goals, and schedules and budgets for projects incorporating objectives in the preparation of project plans. ● Provide leadership to specialized areas on projects through their completion, including a training plan, implementation of solution and hand-off to operations. Communicate effectively with HRCs on progress, changes, or issues that could affect the delivery of products or services. ● Collaborate with HRCs to present project reports, conveying status, dependencies, information, or support HR's interests using oral communication and technical expertise.Essential
70● Serve as the lead UAF strategic partner with campus chancellor and leadership to understand strategy and objectives to help drive a high-performance culture. Will act as a knowledge base and point of contact for all university-specific HR needs. ● Work closely with the Director of Labor and Employee Engagement to ensure positive and strong working relationships with university leadership, supervisors and employees. ● Help identify successes and areas for improvement and work with the HR team to refine processes, standards, and workflows that maximize efficiency. ● Collaborate with stakeholders on HR initiatives and ad-hoc projects in service of organizational alignment and also manage the planning, administration, and implementation. ● Coach and support leaders, supervisors, and colleagues with issues related to work challenges, change management efforts, and work with Labor and Employee Engagement for investigations, guiding supervisors and performance management, etc. Works closely with management to improve work relationships, build morale, and increase productivity and retention. ● Provides senior level specialist interpretation and guidance to senior leadership regarding HR policies, practices, legal and compliance matters to ensure equal and consistent application. ● Assist with tracking and driving key campus metrics. Review and interpret HR data and people metrics to identify business or process improvement opportunities, understand trends, and inform solutions. ● Serve as a primary liaison between UAF and UA System Office HR functions to handle and represent UAF matters within the structure and achieve results. ● Demonstrated experience and effectiveness in HR practices, process improvement, and employee engagement including labor and employee relations matters
● Experience with employee onboarding and orientation programs/oversight
● Excellent relationship building, customer service, communication and consultative skills, and ability to interact with all levels within the organization
● Strong verbal communication, writing, and interpersonal skills along with the ability to form strong cross-functional relationships
● Ability to handle sensitive information with the highest degree of integrity and confidentiality
● Knowledge of federal and state employment laws, policies, regulations, and procedures
● Ability to interpret, clarify, and effectively communicate technical/complex information to a highly diverse employee population
● Requires a comprehensive understanding of HR (payroll, personnel, benefits, recruitment, budget), including HR processes, HR theory, and HR compliance
● Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and Google Suite
● Must be able to analyze problems and develop strategies for resolution and recommend actions for improvements to current processes
● Must be able to prioritize workload independently and meet deadlines under stressful situations


  • Minimum of five years of experience in human resources, labor and employee relations, business or related activity. 
  • Previous supervisory experience is preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field, OR an equivalent combination of training and experience. Master’s degree preferred.
  • While not required, prior experience in a unionized environment and SHRM/HRCI certification would be of additional benefit. 

This position will be physically based at the UAF campus in Fairbanks, Alaska. While in-person work is preferred, remote/hybrid work is potentially available for this position, with on campus work needed for collaboration meetings.

This is a full-time, Grade 82, minimum $72,363 yearly, DOE, 12-month position complete with a competitive salary and UA employee benefits package.
