Position Summary:

The Egan library, University of Alaska Southeast, is seeking a part-time reference librarian to cover evening and weekend desk shifts. As a reference librarian, you will provide reference services and specialized research guidance for student, faculty, staff, and public users of an academic library utilizing online databases, the Internet, the Alaska Library Catalog, and print resources. Temporary Reference Librarians also participate in collection development (evaluation and assessment of current collections and potential additions) and the creation of print and online instruction materials (such as library research guides and curated displays). To be successful in this position, applicants should have knowledge and skill in the principles and practices of librarianship, as well as demonstrated ability to handle both basic and complex reference inquiries in person, over the phone, and via online chat and email; communicate effectively with library patrons; troubleshoot and assist patrons with technology; and work with minimum supervision. Experience providing reference service in a library is preferred. This is a temporary, part-time position for weekend and evening hours.

Under the supervision of the Information Literacy Librarian, temporary reference librarians play an important role in maintaining full services during hours of operations. Professional training and development opportunities will be provided as needed. 

This is a Grade 78 part-time, casual temporary staff assignment and the incumbent will work no more than 14 hours per week. There are no benefits associated with this position.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

  • Advanced knowledge of the principles and practices of the library profession.
  • Working knowledge of research methods and tools, including knowledge of, or the ability to quickly learn and effectively use, Egan Library’s catalog and research databases.
  • Technology skills to include Google Suite, Word, Internet searching, common office equipment, and technology troubleshooting. Able and willing to quickly learn new technologies and software. Able to teach library users of varying skills levels to effectively use various technologies.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgement and think creatively to solve problems.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and take initiative.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs with or without a reasonable accommodation.
  • Reliable and dependable.

TYPICAL EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience providing reference service, especially in an academic setting, is preferred. Experience successfully working with people of diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds is preferred.

REQUIRED EDUCATION OR TRAINING:

  • A Master’s degree (ALA accredited MLS or MLIS) in library/information studies is required.
  • Experience providing reference service, especially in an academic setting, is preferred.
