Position Summary:

The Department of Residence Life at UAA is recruiting for potential openings for the Residential Community Ambassador (RCA) position for the Spring 2022 semester. RCAs often serve as the first point of contact for prospective residents and their families, and strive to provide engaging and accurate information about the residential community and living on campus. In addition, RCAs provide exceptional customer service and have advanced professional communication skills. The Department of Residence Life supports on-campus housing for 500+ residents and works in partnership with Campus Services and Housing Facilities & Finance. Our program provides leadership training, experiential training, awareness of diverse lifestyles and cultures, co-curricular programs and activities (educational and social), and behavioral accountability. Residence Life’s student development approach focuses on enriching each student’s higher education experiences by delivering high quality, student-centered programs and services.

Compensation: this is an hourly position--$10.50 per hour / 10-20 hours per week

Summary.

The Department of Residence Life supports on-campus housing for 500+ residents and works in partnership with Campus Services and Housing Facilities & Finance.  Our program provides leadership training, experiential training, awareness of diverse lifestyles and cultures, co-curricular programs and activities (educational and social), and behavioral accountability.  Residence Life’s student development approach focuses on enriching each student’s higher education experiences by delivering high quality, student-centered programs and services.

Job Duties.

  • Give enthusiastic and in-depth residential campus tours, highlighting UAA resources and strengths to daily residential campus visitors, group visits, and during recruitment events in person and virtually.

  • Communicate effectively with both students and supervisor with complete, accurate, and timely information.

  • Give presentations in one-on-one and group settings.

  • Customer Service and outreach.

  • Assist in preparing for daily visitors by preparing materials and digital check-in forms.

  • Provide outreach to prospective students by conducting outgoing call campaigns and following up with students after events.

  • Assemble mailings, information packets, event folders, and other recruitment materials.

  • Support and abide by the UAA Student Code of Conduct and University regulations. 

  • Social Media content development.

  • Assist with other projects as needed.

 

Academic Eligibility.

To be eligible for this student position, candidates must:

  1. Be admitted and enrolled in a University of Alaska system in a degree-program with a minimum of six (6) credit hours for undergraduate students or six (6) credit hours for graduate students during regular semesters of employment; or

  2. For employment between semesters, be admitted in a degree-seeking program, and demonstrate plans to enroll for six (6) or more credit hours for undergraduate students or six (6) or more credit hours for graduate students in the next regular semester; and

  3. Have a minimum 2.50 term and cumulative grade point average (GPA); satisfactory term grade point average (2.50 or above) or approval from the MAU Senior Student Services officer or their designee, and maintain successful academic progress.

  4. Students enrolled in non-traditional programs of study will be considered eligible for student employment with the approval of the Senior Student Services officer.

  5. An applicant must provide evidence of enrollment as outlines above to substantiate employment eligibility.

  6. Be in good disciplinary standing at the time of appointment and must remain in good disciplinary standing throughout the duration of employment. Should the Department of Residence Life student employee be placed on disciplinary probation, the individual will no longer be eligible for employment within the department.

  7. Position reappointment from semester to semester is contingent upon the following: academic eligibility, successful progress toward degree completion, performance evaluation, and judicial standing.

NOTICE: Students must maintain enrollment and regular attendance for a minimum of at least 6 undergraduate credit hours or 6 graduate credit hours to be exempt from FICA (Social Security and Medicare) tax. A credit hour load below the minimum required for full-time student status will require the withholding of FICA tax (non-resident aliens on an appropriate visa who meet student employment criteria will continue to be exempt from FICA regardless of credit hour load). While in a student position, a student cannot hold any other type of simultaneous employment with the university.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities.

Successful applicants will have some experience living in a residential campus community and/or familiarity with student leadership in a university setting. 

  • Willingness to share personal experience in a public setting in relation to UAA.

  • Ability to display enthusiasm, passion, and energy about being a student at UAA.

  • Excellent interpersonal and public relation skills, and comfort speaking in large and small groups, over the phone, in virtual settings, and in-person.

  • Exercises independent judgment and decision-making in developing new procedures or techniques.

  • Applicants should be self-motivated, project-oriented individuals.

  • Must possess the ability to lead peers, collaborate with university and community partners.

  • Ability to write and edit business-related documents with attention to grammar, spelling, clarity, and accuracy.

  • Ability to create print and web advertising for program publicity.

  • Ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively, sometimes with limited supervision.

  • Ability to meet deadlines and work cooperatively with other departmental and campus staff.

  • General knowledge of UAA and the university system.

Typical Education or Training.

  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite, especially Word and Excel.

  • Familiarity and ability to conduct research via the Internet and other resources.

Position Requirements.

  • Preference will be given to  applicants living on-campus in order to fulfill position responsibilities. 

  • Speaking, Standing, Walking, Keyboarding, Sitting, Writing

  • Normal Office Environment

Preferred:

Preference will be given to qualified applicants who also are eligible for Federal Work Study as a form of financial aid. 

Candidates must be UAA students enrolled in a minimum of 6 credits, have a 2.5 UAA cumulative and semester/term grade point average, and be in good disciplinary and academic standing. At the time of appointment and throughout employment, Residence Life student staff members may not be on disciplinary probation.
