Position Summary:

UAF eCampus is looking for an instructional designer to join our fast-paced, highly collaborative office culture focused on improving education by providing a wide range of faculty and course development support. Applicants must be energetic, team ­oriented but self-directed, versatile with technology, and willing to adapt to new situations and tools on the fly. As one of our Instructional Designers, you’ll work with faculty members to create online courses in a variety of disciplines, assist faculty and staff in learning best practices in online education, and further eCampus's mission of providing a high­ quality, interactive educational experience to students in Alaska and around the world. Special focus on this position with be on applying accessibility guidelines to course developments. Applicants will also engage in graphic design, web design, media production and other creative outlets for project development related to the online classroom or to faculty development training. This is an on-site position and the successful applicant will work on the UAF campus in Fairbanks.


10Research Actively search for new technologies, software, and practices to enable or enhance online and distance teaching and learning.Essential
20Design Develop websites, multimedia training material, and print material in support of distance education initiatives and activities. This includes creating websites and material for programs and creating text and graphics-based media to communicate best practices and emerging ideas in the field.Essential
20Project Management Support UAF eCampus and other university faculty, staff, and units in problem-solving using digital tools and the distance-learning modality. This can include a wide range of projects, from facilitating an internal program to address an observed gap to collaborating with a partner unit or group. This work requires start-to-finish project management, from identifying the problem(s) and desired outcomes, proposing responses, and breaking the work down into manageable, distributed pieces across a team.Essential
20Workshop delivery Prepare and deliver seminar-style instruction for faculty to acquaint them with online and distance-based teaching methods and theory.Essential
30Course Development and Revision Collaborate with instructors to create distance-based, interactive and collaborative courses aligned with contemporary learning theory and accessibility guidelines. This includes identifying and evaluating resources, revising existing curriculum and instructional strategies to work in a distributed environment, creating new curriculum materials in multiple media, devising assessment strategies, and identifying and implementing appropriate technologies for course delivery and assessment. In addition to UAF eCampus courses, this includes work on AlaskaX, UA’s MOOC offerings on the EdX platform.Essential

In addition to a cover letter and resume, applicants are required to submit a portfolio showcasing their expertise.

This is a full-time, term-funded, Grade 80, minimum $55,515.20 yearly, DOE, 12-month position complete with a competitive salary and UA employee benefits package.


Knowledge of existing and emerging distance education technologies and methodologies; Instructional design based on learning theory; Cloud-based and collaborative web tools; Web and graphic design; Learning and/or content management systems; Multimedia production. Multiple operating systems including OS X, Windows, iOS, and Android.

Skill in evaluating, reporting on, and implementing collaboration and instructional technologies; accessibility guidelines (WCAG) as they apply to online content; team building and conflict resolution; ability to understand and interpret educational needs and develop effective solutions; ability to communicate effectively and to develop and provide seminar­-style training to faculty and staff; willingness and ability to adapt to new tools and methods as they emerge.


Bachelor’s degree in a related field and one-two years relevant experience, preferably at the community college or higher education level. May include consultative experience. Master’s degree preferred.


Bachelor's degree in a related field and experience working in the field of online learning. Candidate must be willing to learn new technologies that they aren’t familiar with or need additional train: graphic design, web design, media production, accessibility standards, adult learning pedagogy.

Upon advancing to the interview stage, candidates will be asked to do live presentation given to UAF eCampus. Details will be provided one day in advance of scheduled interview.

Term Position:

This position is a term-funded position and is reviewed annually for contract renewal at the University's discretion.
