Position Summary:

As our Senior Compensation Specialist, you’ll help the University of Alaska by supporting supervisors and employees across the system on all compensation related items. Every day we’ll rely on you to develop and maintain all elements of a comprehensive system including structural design, classification descriptions, career development and responsiveness to changing market and internal conditions. To thrive in this role, you must be able to provide excellent customer service to students, faculty, and staff on compensation benchmarking, affiliated job families, salary ranges, and compensation programs.


100%Act as a key partner with the Director of Talent Acquisition and Sr. Talent Acquisition Specialist in developing and evaluating key pay, recruiting and turnover metrics to formulate a strategy for attracting talent. Assist in developing and maintaining all elements of a comprehensive system including structural design, classification descriptions, career development and responsiveness to changing market and internal conditions. Research, develop and recommend modifications to classification and compensation policies, regulations and processes. Assess requests and follow UA policies and regulations for exceptional step placements, in-grade step increases, promotions, and bonuses. Determine if the request is in the best interests of the university based on the individual’s qualifications, market data and internal equity within UA. Review and approve or deny requests for out of classes. When deemed necessary, conduct salary analysis to ensure internal parity. Provide guidance to UA supervisors on compensation tools and best practices to reward and retain employees. Create supervisor and HR Coordinator training on compensation Create and update compensation benchmarking, affiliated job families, salary ranges, and compensation program recommendations for UA staff in collaboration with the Director and CHRO. Revise/update job families, develop new job families as needed. In the job family development, lead work team, research occupation category, write/edit specifications, allocate positions, evaluate job family levels to determine pay grades. Review with supervisor. Lead annual salary survey data reporting submissions and responses to compensation data requests. Serve on the statewide Budget work team. Respond to system-wide requests for review and classification appeals including seeking information resolution, recommending appropriate action, identifying, convening and training appeal panels, facilitating appeal meetings and coordinating the response to appellants. Serve as a backup to the Classification Specialist with FLSA administration and position classification reviews. Develop, implement, and maintain a compensation system for student employment including pay and classification structure. Review with the Director and provide a forum for input before final approval. Serve as a lead to the Classification Specialist. Perform other duties as assigned.Essential


  • Requires comprehensive understanding of HR (payroll, personnel, benefits, recruitment, budget) including HR processes, HR theory, and HR compliance
  • Ability to interpret and follow UA policies, regulations and practices
  • Demonstrated knowledge of compensation and classification systems
  • Ability to interpret applicable state and federal employment law
  • Intermediate skills with office automation applications, advanced Excel required
  • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously; has the ability to plan, meet deadlines, and manage competing priorities.
  • Ability to effectively build and manage processes, tools, and systems
  • Ability to translate ideas into clear written and visual materials/communication
  • Must be able to analyze problems and develop strategies for resolution


Minimum of four years of progressively responsible experience in Human Resources, including compensation and classification.


Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources or related field, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Master’s degree preferred. Professional human resources certification preferred.

This position may be filled in Anchorage, Fairbanks, or Juneau.

This is a full-time, Grade 81, minimum $64,210 yearly, DOE, 12-month position complete with a competitive salary and UA employee benefits package. UA employees receive excellent benefits including participation in State of Alaska PERS retirement, 12 paid holidays per year, tuition waivers for employees and family members, and affordable medical, dental and vision care coverage.
