Position Summary:

This is a Student Assistant B Labor Pool at UAA, recruiting for potential openings for the Spring '22 academic year.

Live-in Student Position (Student Assistant B) $10.34/hour plus room & board

The Department of Residence Life is actively recruiting for potential openings for student positions for the Spring 2022 semester.

Applicants will be considered for each of the available placements and successful candidates will be placed accordingly should openings become available.

The Department of Residence Life supports residential housing for 600+ residents. Our program provides leadership training, experiential learning, awareness of diverse lifestyles and cultures, co-curricular programs and actives (educational and social), and behavioral accountability.  Residence Life’s student development approach focuses on enriching each student’s higher education experience by delivering high quality, student-centered programs and services.

Working as a live-in student staff member is an enjoyable and challenging experience, and provides opportunities to gain marketable skills in human relations, customer service, time management, business writing, and team building that few other on-campus positions offer.

These are live-in positions, meaning that to be considered, applicants must plan to reside on campus in UAA's residential living community for the duration of employment. Live-in student staff are assigned to live in one of UAA's suite-style residence hall or apartment communities and serve as a resource to residential students, with a full semester commitment for Spring 2022.

ACADEMIC ELIGIBILITY

To be eligible for this student position, candidates must:

  1. Be admitted and enrolled in a University of Alaska system in a degree-program with a minimum of twelve (12) credit hours for undergraduate students or six (6) credit hours for graduate students during regular semesters of employment; or
  2. For employment between semesters, be admitted in a degree-seeking program, and demonstrate plans to enroll for twelve (12) or more credit hours for undergraduate students or six (6) or more credit hours for graduate students in the next regular semester; and
  3. Have at least a 2.50 cumulative grade point average (GPA); satisfactory term grade point average (2.50 or above) or approval from the MAU Senior Student Services officer or their designee, and maintain successful academic progress.
  4. Students enrolled in non-traditional programs of study will be considered eligible for student employment with the approval of the Senior Student Services officer.
  5. An applicant must provide evidence of enrollment as outlines above to substantiate employment eligibility.
  6. Be in good disciplinary standing at the time of appointment and must remain in good disciplinary standing throughout the duration of employment. Should the Department of Residence Life student employee be placed on disciplinary probation, the individual will no longer be eligible for employment within the department.
  7. Position reappointment from fall to spring semesters is contingent upon the following: academic eligibility, successful progress toward degree completion, performance evaluation, and judicial standing.

NOTICE: Students must maintain enrollment and regular attendance for a minimum of at least 6 undergraduate credit hours or 6 graduate credit hours to be exempt from FICA (Social Security and Medicare) tax. A credit hour load below the minimum required for full-time student status will require the withholding of FICA tax (non-resident aliens on an appropriate visa who meet student employment criteria will continue to be exempt from FICA regardless of credit hour load). While in a student position, a student cannot hold any other type of simultaneous employment with the university.  

 

REQUIRED: KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES

As live-in, paraprofessional staff members, successful candidates must posses, and be able to demonstrate, the following:

  • A willingness to learn and teach
  • The ability to be innovative, imaginative, and motivating.
  • The ability to work effectively with others as part of a diverse team.
  • Previous experience working in an environment that requires public contact.
  • A sense of responsibility and a strong work ethic.

In addition, Residence Advisors must be available and visible to residents.

NOTE:

Preference will be given to qualified applicants who also are eligible for Federal Work Study as a form of financial aid. Successful applicants will have some experience living in a residential campus community and/or familiarity with student leadership in a university setting.

TYPICAL EDUCATION OR TRAINING:

Residence Life student staff are required to adhere to the following deadlines and attend and participate in the following training and staff development activities, which are provided as part of employment:

  • All regularly scheduled staff meetings
  • Monthly staff development sessions.
  • Involvement in one departmental collateral committee
  • Individual meetings with supervisor as scheduled
  • Mandatory beginning and mid-year trainings (tentatively scheduled January 5-7, 2022)
  • Required certifications (tentatively scheduled for December 19, 2021-January 7, 2022)
  • Mandatory Staff Training and Development activities are mandatory. Regularly scheduled staff meetings, and staff development trainings.
  • Mandatory spring semester Move-in (tentatively scheduled for January 8-9, 2022) and Welcome Home Week events (via sign-ups, for the January 8-17, 2022 period)
  • Student staff will be encouraged to attend other development/leadership training activities as they become available. Examples include local meetings, conferences, training sessions, local/regional/national student leadership conferences, etc.

RESIDENT ADVISOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

Commitment is through May 3, 2022 at 11:00 am Alaska Standard Time. Attendance at all training sessions is required.

  1. Live and work in one of UAA’s residential communities.

  2. Facilitate and promote a positive community in your assigned area and on residential campus. 

  3. Develop rapport with residents and serve as a resource to students in the assigned area.

  4. Serve as a role model and mentor in conduct, attitude, participation, and academics, both on and off campus; positively represent the Department of Residence Life and the University of Alaska Anchorage.

  5. Educate residents on the Student Code of Conduct, Community Living Standards, and University regulations. Confront and report violations of the Student Code of Conduct, Community Living Standards, and University regulations. 

  6. Regular availability and visibility to residents is important. The RA position should have priority after academic commitments and before extracurricular activities.

  7. Host social and educational activities, plan floor/building activities, provide individual peer advising, and assist in general community management.

  8. Collaborate and effectively communicate with other staff members and campus partners when appropriate. 

  9. Build community through student engagement and activities while working at least one scheduled hour at hall desks and/or in the Cama-i Room.

  10. Support residents to become self-advocates for their academic experience and wellness through active and passive programming, education, and individual contact.

  11. Facilitate Welcome Home Weeks programs (fall and spring).

  12. Report to supervisors any concerning behaviors in support of resident wellness.

  13. Attend regularly scheduled staff meetings, staff development meetings, and leadership trainings.

  14. Attend and participate in departmental committees and programs. 

  15. Attend and participate in 1-on-1 supervisor meetings.

  16. Actively contribute to building a cohesive and productive Residence Life team and act as a positive support for your peers. 

  17. Communicate effectively with both students and supervisor with complete, accurate, and timely information. This includes completing all required paperwork in a timely and accurate manner, promptly posting signs, and identifying and reporting maintenance concerns in common areas.

  18. Provide support for any resident mental health crises or emergency situations that may arise. 

  19. Encourage interaction among residents, idea sharing, and community activity participation.

  20. Participate in rotating on-call coverage with other members of their staff team to enhance the safety of the residents and residential community. On-call duty requires that RAs stay in the residential community and be available to respond to emergencies and enact life/safety response systems. 

  21. Complete requirements of the residential curriculum.

  22. Facilitate housing processes throughout the academic year, including, but not limited to, checking residents in and out of their assignments, delivering letters, completing room inspections, and assist with the opening and closing of the residential campus for the academic year.

  23. Other duties as assigned.

 

PEER ACADEMIC & WELLNESS LEADER RESPONSIBILITIES:

Commitment is through May 3, 2022 at 11:00 am Alaska Standard Time. Attendance at all training sessions is required.

  19. Support the social media efforts of the Department of Residence Life. 

  20. Be available outside of programming requirements for continued outreach to residents. 

  21. Complete programming and community development requirements as assigned.

  22. Provide support to programming efforts in the Residence Life office. 

  23. Serve on the PAW Committee to produce 1 recurring, community-wide themed program per month.

  24. Assist with the opening and closing of the residential campus for the academic year.

  25. Other duties as assigned.
