Position Summary:

The Institute of Arctic Biology (IAB) and the Alaska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit are seeking a GIS Analyst/Programmer. This individual will provide GIS and spatial database support for a research project on climate vulnerability of aquatic species in sub-Arctic Alaska. Duties:

100%(50%) Generate environmental spatial datasets and apply tabular attribution information using ArcGIS or similar software. (30%) Compile, attribute, edit and maintain data in geographic and operational databases and their associated documentation. (10%) Establish and maintain GIS database quality control and quality assurance procedures. (10%) Automate GIS tasks and/or geoprocessing using Python or other scripting languages.Essential

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

Ability to:
1) clearly communicate technical ideas, whether to other technical peers or non-technical project managers or customers.
2) learn new technologies, work independently, and quickly turnaround maps and other deliverables.
3) compile, attribute, edit and maintain data in geographic and operational databases and their associated documentation.
4) assist in establishing and maintaining GIS database quality control and quality assurance procedures.
5) develop automated scripts, tools or programs with common programming languages including but not limited to Python, SQL, Java, C#, and Visual Basic.
6) manage GIS data within spatial and non-spatial databases
7) use environmental data and support development of applications for visualization, analysis, and presentation of environmental data.

TYPICAL EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., geographic information systems, geography or a closely related field that required equivalent coursework in geographic information systems) and 2 years experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

REQUIRED EDUCATION OR TRAINING:

Experience extracting, manipulating, and exploiting spatial datasets using ArcGIS (v10.x).
Experience using Python and other scripting languages to automate GIS task and/or geoprocessing

Term Position:

This position is a term-funded position and is reviewed annually for contract renewal at the University's discretion.
