Position Summary:

The Alaska Arctic Observatory and Knowledge Hub (AAOKH) at the International Arctic Research Center and University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) invites applications for a 1-2 year Post Doctoral Fellow. We are searching for early career researchers with expertise across some combination of the following themes: community-based monitoring, data management and visualization, Indigenous Knowledge, adaptation planning, natural resource management, and/or human dimensions of Arctic change. The Post Doctoral Fellow will have the opportunity to co-develop a research project that relies on holistic environmental observations from community-based monitoring programs in the coastal realm of Arctic Alaska. The Post Doctoral Fellow will contribute to collaborative approaches to data management and visualization with an overarching goal to improve the relevance and usefulness of community-based environmental observations, which can inform planning and decision making in climate change adaptation and natural resource management at the local scale.


100Research: Apply transdisciplinary data science techniques in the context of improving relevance of community-based environmental observations across northern coastal Alaska. Explore several related themes of environmental change in the Alaska Arctic, Indigenous data sovereignty, and community-driven research, focusing on: a) Co-production of database re-design and transformation to make community-based observations more useful and useable by partnering communities as well as interdisciplinary researchers. b) Engage with partnering communities to align community-based observations with FAIR and CARE Principles for Indigenous data governance and sovereignty ( c) Use community-based observations and monitoring to address Indigenous decision-making or research priorities identified through community partnerships.Essential


This position will be physically located at the UAF campus in Fairbanks, Alaska.  While there may be a current opportunity for remote work, the successful finalist will be expected to report to duty at the UAF office no later than 60 days from written notice provided by the university unless other arrangements are made.

This position will be part of a diverse and interdisciplinary team of UAF researchers and students, Iñupiaq scholars, observers, and contributing communities. Research will be focused on AAOKH’s long-term database infrastructure in collaboration with researchers and organizations that are part of the Exchange for Local Observations and Knowledge of the Arctic network, with funding from the National Science Foundation. The successful applicant will explore innovative approaches to data management and visualization with an overarching goal to improve the relevance and usefulness of community-based environmental observations.

The Post Doctoral Fellow will have the opportunity to develop original research questions to  explore several related themes of Arctic environmental change and community-centered resource management, data system design with ethics and Indigenous data self-determination and sovereignty in mind, and/or community-driven adaptation planning. Research projects and methodology will be co-developed with AAOKH Observers and leadership as well as regional partners. 

Candidates with collaborative work or research experience with Indigenous community, Tribal, or organizational partners are highly preferred. 

This position is based at the International Arctic Research Center on the Troth Yeddha’ campus at UAF, although remote work requests may be considered. Supervision and mentoring will be provided by Dr. Donna Hauser, and the Post Doctoral Fellow will also have additional opportunities to build collaborations across other related networks and efforts. The initial appointment will be for 1 year, with the potential for reappointment pending performance review.  


Knowledge and ability to engage in community-based or community-driven research and/or meaningful engagement with Indigenous organizations.

Knowledge and ability to work with and synthesize diverse social, ecological, and qualitative data.

Knowledge of database management and organization, preferably in programming languages such as Ruby or Python.

Ability to publish in peer-reviewed journals and ability to conduct multidisciplinary research.

Strong interpersonal and communication skills for diverse audiences and partners.

Familiarity working, living, or conducting research in rural Alaska and/or other Arctic regions is preferred.

Required Education and Experience: 

PhD (already received, or having completed all requirements and waiting graduation) in a relevant discipline and 2 years of research related to the relevant scientific field.
