Position Summary:

Rasmuson Library is currently looking for students for our Circulation counter for check-in and check-out, book-stacks maintenance, and patron assistance. Up to 40 hours per week during the summer, with various shifts available that may include evenings and weekends.

Duties:

DAILY DUTIES:

Under the general direction of Circulation supervisors, assist in the general operations of the Circulation and Media areas: Register new patrons and update patron records, maintaining confidentiality.  Check out, check in, and renew circulating library materials.  Empty indoor and outdoor book drops.  Shelve books in correct call-number order.  Search for missing items.  Shelf-read book stacks for accuracy of shelving.  Answer phone and give basic information or direct questions to public services staff or librarians.  Instruct patrons in operation of media equipment.  Assist patrons with public printers and copiers.  Assist in opening and closing the library.  Schedule conference rooms and other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Must have the ability to learn and perform assigned work; follow oral instructions; work cooperatively with faculty, staff, and other students; communicate effectively with all levels; and read and write English at a level appropriate to the position.  Must have excellent customer service skills; meet and greet the public in a pleasant and businesslike manner and must maintain confidentiality of patron records.  Must be able to place books on high shelves and regularly lift and move 30-pound pieces of equipment to counter height. 

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:

Typing and word-processing skills.  Neat handwriting/printing.  Responsibility with ability to work independently and perform detailed, *repetitive* work with a high degree of accuracy.  Strong attention to detail.  Flexibility to learn a variety of tasks and work with multiple departments.  Preferred: Basic library research knowledge.  Previous library experience a plus, but not necessary.

This position starts at $10.34 per hour.

Rasmuson Library Hours:

Monday -Friday 10:00am - 6:00pm

Saturday and Sunday 12:00pm - 6:00pm

Applicants must be received prior to 11:55 PM Alaska Standard Time on May 16, 2021, to be considered.  Applications received after this time and date may not be considered for this position.

Applicant must be enrolled as a UAF student taking a minimum of 6 credits per semester with a minimum GPA of 2.0 or a newly enrolled student.

NOTICE: Students must maintain enrollment and regular attendance for a minimum of at least 6 undergraduate credit hours or 6 graduate credit hours to be exempt from FICA (Social Security and Medicare) tax. A credit hour load below the minimum required for full-time student status will require the withholding of FICA tax (non-resident aliens on an appropriate visa who meet student employment criteria will continue to be exempt from FICA regardless of credit hour load). While in a student position, a student cannot hold any other type of simultaneous employment with the university.
