Position Summary:

The Alaska Center for Energy and Power (ACEP) is seeking a Research Professional. This position will be located in Juneau, Alaska. The Alaska Center for Energy and Power (ACEP) is dedicated to applied energy research and testing focused on lowering the cost of energy throughout Alaska and developing economic opportunities for the State, its residents, and its industries. The position will provide opportunity to work independently and collaborate with a diverse set of energy professionals and stakeholders to improve access to energy for Alaskans. The successful candidate will collaborate with electric utilities and other energy stakeholders in SouthEast Alaska to help them realize their energy objectives through integrated resource planning, feasibility studies, and identifying project ideas. There will be opportunities to collaborate with ACEP researchers on various other research projects with a focus on power system modelling, feasibility studies, data analysis and report writing.This recruitment is open internally to current UA employees or those otherwise eligible to apply to internal postings.

Duties:

10Software development: Contribute to the development of power system simulation and analysis software tools in python and Matlab, including MiGRIDS. Contribute to the development of data handling, cleaning, and synthesis software tools. Document work and provide user support as necessary.Essential
10Time series data collection and handling: Work with utility and other collaborators to gather necessary data. Follow proper data handling guidelines and contribute to the creation of data handling guidelines as necessary. Develop and perform data checks and fixes for missing and erroneous data.Essential
25Power system modeling: Execute detailed techno-economic energy system sizing studies in different software platforms including MiGRIDS (Micro Grid Renewable Integration, Dispatch and Sizing) and Homer. Perform independent analysis in matlab and/or python and spreadsheet software. Interface with utility and research collaborators in the development and analysis of models. Work independently and provide defensible and well-researched results.Essential
5Project documentation: Document research results in technical reports, peer-reviewed publications, and presentations. Support the development of ACEP project work including proposal writing, participating in working groups, and communicating with current and potential funding partners to identify opportunities. Assist with other project development tasks as necessary.Essential
50SouthEast Liaison: Meet regularly with the Southeast Conference (SEC), Southeast utilities, and communities to understand their energy needs, interests, and long-term goals. Propose and work on projects that will help them meet their goals. Connect and develop project ideas with resources and collaborators in the Alaska Center for Energy and Power (ACEP) and beyond. Serve as an idea generator for projects, collaborations, and funding opportunities. Participate in general outreach activities such as briefings for public distribution, lectures, and other public interfaces when appropriate. Represent ACEP in various energy-related working groups, as needed. Develop and present research projects and proposals to ACEP management. Identify grants and other funding to support proposed projects and proposals.Essential

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: 

Strong analytical skills.

Knowledge of accurate data collection methods and of standard reporting procedures.

Knowledge of the typical generation dispatch of islanded hybrid-diesel microgrids (10s kW to 10s MW).

Knowledge of the dispatch of larger grids including the Alaska Railbelt Grid (100s MW and greater).

Knowledge of general electrical engineering power system concepts.

Ability to perform transmission, distribution, and power electronic modeling in RMS (root mean square) and EMT (electromagnetic transient) platforms.

Ability to independently execute analyses for large datasets.

Proficient ability to produce accurate technical documentation and scientific text for publications.

Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Project management skills and attention to detail.

Ability to develop models for use by other research professionals.

Required Education and Experience: 

Masters degree in engineering and two years of research experience at the postgraduate level in a field relevant to the research, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Fluency in Matlab and/or python and Microsoft Office software is required.

Candidates with a Bachelor's degree and an equivalent combination of training and professional experience will be considered.
