The Geophysical Institute at the University of Alaska Fairbanks is currently searching to fill a Post Doctoral position in Geochronology with the Tectonics and Sedimentation research department. The Tectonics and Sedimentation research group strives to reconstruct the processes of Earth’s history over a variety of time scales. The successful applicant will be involved with the design, set up, calibration and operation of a newly funded next generation noble gas multi-collector mass spectrometer system, and will have the opportunity to collaborate with the numerous users of the currently operating UAF Geochronology lab.
We are particularly interested in scientists with a demonstrated record of Noble Gas Mass Spectrometry, and applicants capable of running routine multiphase 40Ar/39Ar geochronology for the diverse needs of the state including economic, energy, volcanology and academic objectives. Preference will be given to candidates with multi-collector experience and those with interest in developing advanced methodologies for dating young material, detrital minerals, or other small mineral phases.
The successful candidate will be encouraged to develop collaborations within the university and external agencies to foster the development of their career and explore their research interests. The Geophysical Institute at the University of Alaska is a world-class research institute with a strong commitment to Earth Science, including the Alaska Volcano Observatory and Tectonics and Sedimentation research group. The geochronology facility located in the Department of Geosciences hosts a wide array of sample processing labs and funding for a new Noble Gas Mass Spectrometer. Fairbanks is centrally located in Alaska, and optimally positioned for an eager geochronologist to develop new analytical procedures and protocols to help unravel the complex geologic history of the northern Cordilleran as well as bolster their career and professional growth.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
Ability to conduct the noble gas mass spectrometry technique.

Analytical skills.
Knowledge of research methods and analytical procedures.
Knowledge of standard reporting procedures.
Skilled in accurate data collection methods.
Ability to use computerized tools to organize and analyze information and communicate findings.
Required Education and Experience:
PhD degree (already received, or having completed all requirements and waiting graduation) in Ar Geochronology.
