Position Summary:

The Alaska Resources Library & Information Services (ARLIS) is the library of eight federal and state resource management agencies, in partnership with the University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA). It is co-located within the UAA Consortium Library but separately managed. This job offers the convenience of working on campus and the flexibility of working around your classes. Principal responsibilities include scanning documents and physically preparing library materials to go onto the library shelves by property stamping, applying barcodes, security strips and labels; providing special maintenance as needed such as binding and mending. Other duties may include boxing, unboxing or sorting library materials; checking for duplicates; shelving and shifting of materials using Library of Congress call number systems; putting items in date or alphabetical order; assisting in database cleanup; filing; photocopying; printing from microfiche; scanning microfiche, and microfilm; recycling; retrieving items from shelves and other duties as assigned.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

The incumbent must use a computer keyboard accurately, be detail-oriented, understand written and verbal instructions, have good organizational skills, and must be physically able to handle book carts and must be able to move boxes up to 50 lbs. Applicant must be able to work 10-20 hours per week within the overall time frame of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Required Experience:

Applicant must be a University of Alaska student, enrolled and regularly attended six (6) or more credit hours and must possess a 2.0 or better cumulative grade point average (CGPA). Work experience in an office, bookstore, or library is desirable, but not required. Organizational skills will be tested following the interview.

Typical Education or Training:

High school graduation is required. Typical prior office job training should contribute to proficiency in alpha-numeric filing, accurate typing, and efficient paper handling.

NOTICE: Students must maintain enrollment and regular attendance for a minimum of at least 6 undergraduate credit hours or 6 graduate credit hours to be exempt from FICA (Social Security and Medicare) tax. A credit hour load below the minimum required for full-time student status will require the withholding of FICA tax (non-resident aliens on an appropriate visa who meet student employment criteria will continue to be exempt from FICA regardless of credit hour load). While in a student position, a student cannot hold any other type of simultaneous employment with the university.
