Position Summary:

UAA Information Technology Services is seeking a highly qualified individual for the role of Network Engineer. The ideal candidate will have a solid background with a wide variety of Cisco routing, switching, security and wireless products. Duties:

10Develop project scopes of work, budgets, resource plans and timelines for network engineering projects and initiatives. Prepare project documents and technical reports for projects for distribution both inside IT Services and with other external technical groups.Essential
10Review system operational reports, hardware and software bug notices and release notes on a continuing basis. Analyze results and schedules, utilize the request for change (RFC) process to make changes to systems. Adhere to and promote RFC processes and procedures. Initiate lifecycle planning and system modification to meet changing campus needs or when system performance approaches minimum established service levels.Essential
10Serve as a Level III technical resource within the IT Services organization. Perform on-call as required. Work closely with others on the network team and call center. Develop and implement automated alerting to facilitate proactive management of assigned area of responsibility.Essential
10Serve as expert advisor for campus network and related infrastructure by analyzing incidents and problems in order to arrive at a resolution or develop workaround strategies. Provide solutions related to software, hardware and network integration. Maintain ticket queue to ensure incidents are addressed in a timely manner. Recommend process improvements to reduce waste and increase efficiencies.Essential
5Develop and maintain as-built hardware and software configurations. Maintain systems to ensure configurations are backed up on a regular basis. Other duties as required.Essential
55Analyze, design, test, implement, maintain and document network systems for UAA and community campuses. Implement, manage and troubleshoot existing network environments and support a variety of network related hardware including wired, wireless, security and VOIP. Ensure the performance and high availability of network infrastructure is maintained to industry best practices. Provide outstanding customer service. Perform detailed analysis and interpretation of technical problems requiring specialized networking knowledge and skills. Use diagnostic commands on equipment, packet capture and protocol analyzers for troubleshooting performance issues. Oversee network infrastructure in assigned area of responsibility. Implement specialized solutions such as encrypted tunnels to ensure data privacy. Conduct and participate in network design planning involving other IT Services engineering groups and customers as required. Perform bench testing, burn-in and acceptance testing of new equipment. Install and configure system components in accordance with engineering specifications and with federal, state, local government and manufacturer standards as well as university regulations, standards and policies. This position has primary responsibility and accountability for Wireless networks, Security components of the network as well as coordination with the Facilities department on construction and renovation projects impacting the network. Specific areas of responsibility and accountability include: Wireless 1. Wireless Access Points 2. Wireless Controllers Security 3. Firewalls 4. ISE (Cisco Identity Service Engine)/ACS 5. VPN 6. IPSEC Tunnels (Security team provides requirements and policy) 7. PCI Networks (Security team provides requirements and policy) 8. Cisco Prime 9. IPS (Intrusion Prevention) Facilities Construction Projects 10. Design review (Route/Switch functional area provides backup) 11. Coordination (Route/Switch functional area provides backup)Essential

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

  • Three years experience as a network administrator or engineer with a wide variety of Cisco routing, switching, wireless and VOIP products. 
  • Technical writing skills associated with developing project plans, producing technical reports and conducting detailed technical analysis. 
  • Knowledge of telecommunication inter-networking, principles and practices including protocols, network performance factors, switching and routing functions. 

TYPICAL EXPERIENCE:

  • Three to five years of progressively responsible experience in inter-network engineering, network operations, network design or administration.

REQUIRED EDUCATION OR TRAINING:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related discipline or substantial combination of education, certifications and relevant professional experience.
  • Cisco CCNA/CCNP certification preferred. Must obtain CCNA certification within first year and maintain while employed by the University of Alaska Anchorage.
