Position Summary:

The Writing Center is seeking a student writing tutor to work with UAS students. The job requires solid writing skills and the ability to coach students through all stages of the writing process, though we do provide training with our "grow-a-tutor" model. Perfect writing is not required, but a strong foundation and a willingness to learn are. A student tutor position is a great opportunity to improve mentoring skills, learn about tutoring/teaching strategies, and gain professional work experience. Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis and filled as positions become available.

Duties:

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Completion of/or present enrollment in Writing 211 and 212
  • Average grade of "B" or better previous English courses.
  • Willingness to learn tutoring strategies, improve personal writing abilities, and grow as a tutor.
  • Knowledge of basic academic course content and tutoring strategies required.
  • Must have ability to recognize various learning styles, communicate effectively with students and faculty, and be highly responsible and organized.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgement and decision-making.
  • Prior tutoring experience, preferred.

Student Employment Requirements

  • Must be a UAS student enrolled in a minimum of six credit hours throughout employment duration.
  • Maintain a 2.0 cumulative GPA, unless a first time freshmen. 

All applications must include a writing sample. This sample may be from your previous course work and can be any type of writing. Choose something that highlights your strengths as a writer.  Applications must also include a resume, cover letter, and contact information for three references. 

This is a Student Assistant C position, $10.50/hourly, with exceptional placement dependent on experience. Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis and filled as positions become available.
