Position Summary:

UAA Information Technology (IT) Services is seeking a highly qualified individual for our Director of Infrastructure Services position. The ideal candidate will have a solid background in team leadership, and possess knowledge of a wide range of information technology infrastructure. The Director of Infrastructure Services is responsible for leading the infrastructure side of UAA IT Services. 10Manage budgets, expenditures and revenues in each area of accountability. Fiscal management responsibilities to include implementation, inventory, forecasting, maintenance and audit of budgets to ensure compliance with BOR policies and UA regulations. Manage recharge budget to ensure effective cost management required to achieve annual breakeven targetsEssential
10Oversee the operation of UAA's Datacenter. Develop and implement processes and procedures to maximize effectiveness, efficiency and resiliency of the center, guaranteeing superior customer service and support of the university's technical organizations. Continue the evolution of the center as customer requirements and technologies change over time.Essential
10Serve as a member of the IT Services management team participating actively in the general operation of the organization, its fiscal management and strategy.  Create/modify position descriptions, conduct recruitments for bringing on new personnel, conduct performance appraisals, work with HR on disciplinary matters.Essential
15Provide project management and oversight of active projects in areas of accountability.Essential
45Oversee the operation of UAA''s IT infrastructure, including the Network, Server, Messaging/Directory, Web/Applications and Security engineering teams. Ensure teams are organized to provide exceptional customer service effectively and effeciently. Engage with governance groups, customers, outside experts and other technical staff to develop key performance indicators and benchmarks tailored to UAA''s unique operating environment. Set measurable goals and implement plans to achieve those goals. Ensure operations in all infrastructure disiplines are integrated with other IT operations within ITS as well as throughout the UA system. Successfully handle escalated customer service problems and coordinate necessary resources to satisfy such requests or resolve problems. Demonstrate sensitivity to escalations that require tact and political understanding thereby preserving and improving IT Services'' reputation within the University.  Coordinate with engineers, operations groups, IT Call Center staff, other University support groups and University Advancement staff on rollout of major services associated with new infrastructure.Essential
5Establish effective business relationships with commercial IT service providers and colleagues in other University of Alaska IT organizations resulting in outsourced service delivery and/or shared service delivery.Essential

The Information Technology (IT) Services department provides technology leadership, planning, and a wide range of services supporting the University Major Academic Units (MAU) activities. Services include communications (voice, video, high performance data/messaging networks); computing infrastructure (high availability host services); core applications; distributed learning delivery systems/support; virtual learning environments, web applications, and support services including Technical Support Contact Center. 


  • Broad operational knowledge of information technology including infrastructure, applications, networking, and computer operating systems.

  • Ability to encourage open communication with staff across teams, create an atmosphere of trust, and be fair, open-minded and unbiased in working with staff.

  • Demonstrates strong professional ethics, is flexible and adaptable as a leader/manager and promotes teamwork.

Required Experience:

  • Five years of increasingly responsible management experience in Information Technology, Information Management Systems, Computer Science, Project Management or related discipline.

Typical Education or Training: 

  • Bachelor's Degree in a technical field or equivalent experience.
  • Five years of increasingly responsible management experience in Information Technology, Information Management Systems, Computer Science, Project Management or related discipline.
