Position Summary:

The Academic Advising Center & Career Services is seeking a to add a dynamic individual to join the team as an Academic and Career Advisor. This position will work with students on educational and career planning and major exploration, provide career guidance, job search assistance, as well as Program Administration, planning, development, outreach and implementation. This is a full-time, Grade 79, minimum $26.08/hr, DOE, 10-month position complete with a competitive salary and UA employee benefits package.

Duties:

20Program Administration: Maintain web presence, publicity, and job search site/ programs. Maintain data and generate and distribute reports as required. Maintain Career Services guide. May supervise and lead student employees.Essential
40Academic and Career Advising: Work independently with current, prospective, new, and returning students on educational and career planning and major exploration. Provide career guidance, job search assistance, resume, cover letter writing, and interview support. Administer aptitude tests and interpret test scores and use judgement when advising for courses, majors, and careers. Exercise judgement to apply and interpret major/career planning, learning styles, and basic skills enhancement programs. Administer, score, and interpret standardized major/ career planning, learning styles, and basic skills enhancement programs. Exercise judgement to develop or use informal or non-standardized major/ career exploration and learning styles assessment to facilitate student self-knowledge and discovery. Apply and interpret assessment instruments requiring certification of practitioner. Remain current with student development theories, UAF major and graduation requirements, and with international, national, and statewide employment trends and career specific academic program requirements and student needs through research, professional publications, and networks. Support Academic Advising Center and Division of General Studies advising and retention efforts. Actively participate on university committees.Essential
40Program Planning, Development, Outreach, and Implementation: Evaluate and assess programs and services, including job and career development workshops for students, faculty, and staff. Coordinate and actively collaborate with campus-wide departments for advising, internship, and career events. Organize and implement employer recruiting events and career fairs. Develop strong employer networks and advocate on behalf of UAF students to develop job opportunities. Develop and evaluate internship and job shadow programs. Market opportunities to students and employers at UAF and community events.Essential

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

Knowledge of student development theory, academic and career advising, and university setting. Ability to communicate effectively in person and in writing. Knowledge of best practices, federal and state laws, and legal issues associated with and applicable to student services and higher education, including FERPA. Excellent active listening, intercultural competency, and conflict resolution skills to establish rapport and provide appropriate positive and negative feedback to students. Ability to communicate effectively with employers, the university community, and students. Ability to troubleshoot situations to determine the best course of action. Ability to interpret information to determine placement and develop relevant educational and career plans. Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced student-centered environment. Thorough knowledge of marketing/advertising principles. Ability to work as an influential part of a team. Ability to lead and/or supervise. Knowledge of decision-making strategies and problem-solving skills. Ability to be a team or project leader.

TYPICAL EXPERIENCE:

Three years of relevant experience in an educational setting.

REQUIRED EDUCATION OR TRAINING:

Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field.

This is a full-time, Grade 79, minimum $26.08/hr, DOE, 10-month position complete with a competitive salary and UA employee benefits package.
