Position Summary:

The UAS Sitka Campus is seeking individuals to fill two support staff positions to work as part of a larger team in an effort to fulfill a Title III grant mission to provide extra support to students, especially nontraditional, first-generation, underrepresented, and/or underprepared students. These staff members will work individually with students on campus and at a distance, and they should bring knowledge and experience typical to a student services role, such as student support experience, experience working with or referring students to specialized student services, academic and career coaching, and promoting financial literacy and sustainability. In addition, these staff members will be involved in other grant activities, including facilitating outward relationships with community and industry partners, analyzing institutional research statistical data, researching best practices across student achievement models, and facilitating campus professional development opportunities.


10Campus Collaboration Collaborate with teams of staff and faculty to exchange experiences and to provide input for campus-wide initiatives related to student success and student case management services. Collaborate with events planning efforts to enhance student engagement and inclusivity.Essential
10Training Facilitation Prepare, coordinate, and/or facilitate training opportunities for UAS Sitka staff and faculty in various areas of customer service, student engagement, and student support.Essential
20Research Best Practices Actively seek out researched models for student success and student engagement, particularly regarding nontraditional, first-generation, and underprepared students, with the intention of applying appropriate models to the UAS Sitka campus. Share this information with grant and campus leadership in order to facilitate improved processes in these areas.Essential
60Support Services Serve as one of two primary points of contact for students enrolled in a Sitka-based degree program or students potentially interested in enrolling in a Sitka-based degree program. This includes initiating regular contact with students as well as being available for students who initiate contact. Assist students in a variety of contexts, such as in utilizing available educational resources, defining and evaluating progress toward established goals, improving decision-making skills, practicing effective learning skills, interpreting institutional requirements (e.g., financial aid regulations, academic petition process, etc.), reinforcing self-directed referral to and use of institutional and community support services, and practicing financial literacy and sustainability. Where university staff and faculty with more specific knowledge and experience can provide direct assistance (e.g., in academic advising or course selection), students will be directly referred to those who can best assist. Provide intervention, guidance, and referral for students experiencing difficulties, academically and personally, including assisting students to overcome barriers or skill deficiencies. Provide assistance to students in refining educational goals and objectives, understanding available choices, and assessing the consequences of alternative courses of action. Provide clear and accurate information regarding institutional policies, procedures, resources, and programs. As a “responsible employee” under Title IX, comply with UA reporting procedures as applicable and remain current with annual training. Maintain detailed records and logs of all student communications using assigned university resources to assist in tracking student needs and support opportunities. Work closely with the Student Services Manager and with advisors to help track student needs and student progress toward intended goals. Assist with orienting students to the college experience, including online services and online learning tools. Adhere to FERPA regulations and confidentiality procedures, as well as other applicable regulations and policies. Support occasional events and activities off campus or outside normal office hours as requested by supervisor, department, or Primary Investigator of grant project.Essential

These are five year full-time positions in the Student Services department on the Sitka campus. The positions are located on the Sitka campus.

Required KSAs:
Excellent customer service and networking skills to establish meaningful individual relationships with program and pre-program students in order to support their educational goals.
Ability to communicate effectively, in person and in writing, especially with regard to interpersonal and intercultural communication.
Dedication to working directly with college students of diverse ages and backgrounds.
Ability to work as an influential and constructive part of a team.
Knowledge and experience with supporting students in the context of online education.
Ability to apply research toward innovative problem-solving in the context of student achievement models.
Ability to manage multiple priorities and details independently as assigned by supervisor.
Computer literacy beyond entry level, including word processing, spreadsheets, database management, and online communication and educational tools.

Preferred KSAs:
Familiarity with rural and Alaska Native educational, social, and cultural issues.
Advanced public speaking, training, and/or presentation skills.
Experience gathering and summarizing research to help make knowledgeable decisions.
Knowledge and experience with creatively using multiple media tools and resources such as digital, print, audio, video, to connect with program and pre-program students.


Required Experience:
Two years relevant experience in student services, coaching, teaching, advising, counseling, customer service, or another related career focus.

Preferred Experience:
Experience in providing for the unique needs of distance learning and multicultural students.
Experience in working on grant-funded projects as well as meeting and reporting on grant requirements.
Experience in institutional research methods.


Required Education or Training:
A bachelor’s degree or a combination of an associate’s degree with relevant work experience.

Preferred Education or Training:
A master’s degree in an area related to student services or higher education leadership.
Education or training on the educational, social, and cultural considerations relevant to Alaska Native or Native American and rural students.
Specific training or education in intercultural leadership.
Advanced training or education in advising theory, student support, or a similar field.
