Position Summary:

Mat-Su College seeks a Public Relations and Communications Specialist ready to take our outreach efforts to a new level. This position works closely with the Admissions Representative, and works with and serves as backup to the Web and Digital Media Specialist. This position reports to the Director of Student Services. Standard hours are 8-5 Monday through Friday but occasional overtime and attendance at evening or weekend events may be required. The ideal candidate must be creative, well versed in current communications practices, comfortable working in a team environment, and able to accept and benefit from feedback. Must have strong writing skills and an eye for details. Duties:

20College Promotional Efforts: Contribute materially to planning efforts and seek new ways to engage with the community and expand outreach. Research and evaluate outreach campaigns. Work closely with department director and College staff to identify and meet college-wide marketing and communication needs. Assist college director with off-campus presentations to community audiences. Develop and maintain accessible web content and calendars on assigned web pages. Provide backup coverage for web and social media manager. Maintain archive of college photos for use in publications. Work closely with the Web and Digital Media Specialist during the annual Alaska State Fair cabin, to include recruiting volunteers, designing and ordering the annual t-shirts, and working the fair as necessary to ensure full coverage of the booth for the full duration of the fair event.Essential
20Content Creation: Create original materials for marketing and outreach, including event fliers, online ads, promotional brochures, mailers, web graphics, and recorded or live video content. Materials must reflect and be accessible to the diverse population of students served at MSC. Select appropriate software for publications, web publishing, and design of promotional materials. Ensure consistent branding on printed collateral. Coordinate with print shops. Provide internal printed materials such as business cards, stationery design, telephone roster, and name badges.Essential
30Communications: Develop communication plans and coordinate marketing campaigns as assigned. Provide internal and external communication via list serves, news stories, press releases, and electronic signage. Perform research and produce original content for print, radio, and online ads. Write and edit copy for College publications, video scripts, and other promotional efforts. Secure bids from vendors on advertising and purchase approved ads. Continually seek new content for Mat-Su College news items and feature stories that highlight campus events and the best of Mat-Su College. Conduct interviews with students, faculty, and administrators for feature stories and press releases. Organize volunteers and assist with preparation for contracted photo and video productions.Essential
30Public Relations: Plan and coordinate special events held on campus and within the community, including activities that align with university initiatives to create an inclusive and respectful campus environment. Coordinate a team to create engaging agendas, initiate promotional efforts, and oversee the details, all while staying on budget. Attend internal and external events as a representative of the College to highlight opportunities for students and forge relationships with community partners. Coordinate with existing committees and provide input and assistance on recurring events and celebrations such as commencement and convocation. Ensure proper use of MSC logo on promotional items, handouts, and table displays. Assist with selecting and purchasing promotional items.Essential

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

• Knowledge of inclusive communications best practices, including online ADA accessibility standards.
• Demonstrated initiative and creativity.
• Ability to work effectively with people of diverse backgrounds and experiences.
• Ability to communicate clearly in person, by phone, and via written communication.
• Ability to edit and evaluate content for accuracy, consistency, and clarity.
• Ability to select graphics and words to explain complex processes in a simpler way.
• Ability to exercise sound judgment to assess situations and make decisions.
• Ability to work as part of a team and contribute recommendations, training, and technical assistance.
• Advanced technical skills in using one or more desktop publishing software applications, e.g. Adobe InDesign, Microsoft Publisher, Adobe Photoshop, or similar.
• Knowledge of social media marketing.
• Preference given to candidates skilled in designing and maintaining web pages and producing web content and visuals.
• Preference given to candidates skilled in writing engaging content describing academic degrees, student activities programming, and higher ed public events.

• Experience researching content for collateral materials.
• Demonstrated applicable experience in persuasive and informative writing.
• Demonstrated graphic design experience producing print, multimedia, web, video, and collateral materials targeted toward specific public relations and communication goals.
• Demonstrated experience in web design and management.

Required Education Or Training:

Bachelor's degree in public relations, journalism, marketing, communications, English, social science, or related field, plus two years relevant experience.
OR
Training and experience equivalent to the above.

Salary:

This is a full-time, Grade 78, ($23.84/hour minimum) 12-month position, completed with a competitive salary and UA employee benefits package.
