The UAA Grounds Department is looking for hardworking and dependable students to join our team! Students will assist the crew with snow removal, ice control, greenhouse maintenance and flower production, interior plant care, and other campus beautification and safety tasks. The student should be a self-starter and punctual to work. The student must be able to work independently and in a diverse group setting including following instructions given by management and/or a Lead; relating in a positive manner to management and other employees; and assisting in providing a productive and safe work environment. This is a part-time position providing up to 20 hours per work week, scheduled Monday through Friday between the hours of 7:00am to 3:30pm. During Winter/Spring breaks, student work hours may increase to 40 hours per week while classes are not in session. All working schedules are subject to change as required by the university. Students must have the ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals; the ability to write routine reports and correspondence; and the ability to speak effectively with other employees of the organization, follow directions, and provide feedback to the supervisor.

While performing the duties of this job, the student is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear. The student frequently is required to stand and reach with hands and arms operating hand tools. The student is required to walk, sit, climb or balance, and smell. The student must regularly lift and/or move 10 to 25 pounds and on occasion lift and/or move up to 60 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those a student will encounter while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the student will regularly work in outside weather conditions. The student is sometimes exposed to fumes or airborne particles and vibration as well as wet and/or humid conditions. The noise level in the work environment is sometimes loud.

Valid driver's license and current DMV driving record meeting EHS safe driver criteria will be required for consideration (to be verified by UAA). Students must submit a copy of their driving record with their application packet (no older than 30 days). NOTICE: Students must maintain enrollment and regular attendance for a minimum of at least 6 undergraduate credit hours or 6 graduate credit hours to be exempt from FICA (Social Security and Medicare) tax. A credit hour load below the minimum required for full-time student status will require the withholding of FICA tax (non-resident aliens on an appropriate visa who meet student employment criteria will continue to be exempt from FICA regardless of credit hour load). While in a student position, a student cannot hold any other type of simultaneous employment with the university.
