The Student Health and Counseling Center at the University of Alaska Anchorage, is seeking a State of Alaska licensed Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner for a 40 hours per week, 9 or 12 month position. This individual will work in a student-centered environment, supporting students through assessment, diagnosis and treatment of behavioral health related needs. This individual will be supporting students' academic success through the provision of behavioral health care. The successful applicant will join a team of dedicated health care professionals serving University of Alaska Anchorage students in a fast-paced, integrated physical and mental health clinic with an on-campus location, focused on the areas of primary physical, mental health, public health, prevention, and health promotion services.
20 20% Maintain currency in the vast, intense, and ever changing treatment modalities of health care through regular staff meetings, credentialing requirements, and training opportunities.
Advise faculty and staff regarding student health problems and provide guidance when crises occur, within HIPAA guidelines.
Collaborate with other departments in campus wide planning and activities, as well as with community wide activities.
Encourage and maintain collaborative relationships with area health care providers and agencies.
Write letters to students, parents, financial aid, and other service providers as needed to provide necessary care.

20 20% Provide preventative health services i.e. sleep, counseling for pregnancy, HIV and sexually transmitted infections, exercise, stress reduction, communication, and use of alcohol and other drugs.
Implement interventions and outreach projects including, but not limited to, suicide prevention, resilience and self-care, health and well being, and participation in health fairs.
Provide education to student groups and the campus community on behavioral health related topics.
Assist student/campus groups in health education and consultation.
Participate in campus wide and division wide activities related to our department and campus medical services.
Available as SHCC scheduling allows during regular office hours to assist with crisis calls or crisis walk-ins. Serves in a rotating schedule with other SHCC-MH professionals, carrying a duty phone to provide after hours, weekend, and holiday coverage for the UAA Residence Life, UPD, and DOS campus mental health needs.
Maintain confidentiality in health care records and all other communications to comply with state and federal HIPAA regulations.
Provide consultation for peer ANPs as needed and within the scope of license and skills.
Provide quality assurance reveiw within the clinic.
Participate in staff meetings to regularly develop and review program plans and activities.
May precept student nurse practitioners'' or graduate interns'' clinical experiences.
May serve as external reviewers for master level nursing student''s thesis defense. Essential
60 60% Serves as an Advanced Nurse Practitioner, independently diagnosing and treating primary mental health conditions using clinical judgement.
Diagnose acute and chronic mental health conditions in a diverse multiage and multicultural population.
Order and may conduct laboratory services. Ensure that all testing is performed in compliance with state and federal CLIA requirements.
Consult with and refer to specialists in the health care community such as orthopedics, radiology, endocrinology, dermatology, cardiology, psychiatry, physical therapy,etc.
Implement and manage treatment of acute and chronic mental health conditions.
Provides counseling and crisis intervention for a wide range of mental health conditions.
Prescribe, manage and supervise pharmacological treatment for mental health conditions.
Dispense medication and manage clinic pharmacy consistent with state regulations. Maintain federal Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) licensure.
Implement emergency and crisis interventions for medical and psychiatric situations that arise within the Student Health and Counseling Center.
Create a written record of information gathered and services provided in accordance with legal and professional standards.
Communicate to students and health care providers as needed for follow-up of acute and ongoing care.
Health Education and Prevention
Provide accurate health education to clients regarding their diagnoses, diet, exercise, wellness, coping, and risk factors.
Provide accurate health education designed to enhance well being and reduce harmful health behaviors for the campus community, through sponsorship and implementation of forums, speakers, and the Student Health and Counseling Center website. Essential

This position requires advanced knowledge of general medicine and behavioral health. Nurse Practitioners working at this level are capable of evaluating and treating more complex cases where experience is essential. Nurse Practitioners at this level are able to use their experience to make timely judgments in assessing complicated problems and to make independent decisions regarding treatment.
Master's of Doctoral degree in Nursing from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program with a minimum of at least five years of relevant clinical experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience, with preference for experience in college health care. State of Alaska licensure to practice as a Nurse Practitioner. National Certification (e.g. ANCC or AANP). Federal DEA license. Additional specialized skills and/or additional experience may be required.
Typical Education or Training:
Master's or doctoral degree in Nursing from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program. Five years relevant experience, with preference for experience in college health care, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
State licensure to practice as a Nurse Practitioner National Certification (e.g. ANCC or AANP) Federal DEA license for prescribing medications.
