Position Summary:

The Office of Planning, Analysis, and Institutional Research (PAIR) at the University of Alaska Fairbanks is looking for an Analyst/BI Developer to join our team. Reporting to the Director of PAIR, this position combines the traditional roles of an institutional research analyst and a database developer, while incorporating project management and business intelligence disciplines. We are seeking an exceptional team player who embraces UAF’s mission and six strategic goals.

Duties:

20Build collaborative relationships with Subject Matter Experts across UAF to add to knowledge base and metadata repositories in the Student, Research, Human Resources, and Finance data domains; Bring people together and translate their feedback into actionable data solutions; Identify opportunities for improvement and assess new technology and concepts that can add value to the use of information resources Serve as a resource to the system-wide Data Governance Committee Perform other duties as assigned, particularly serving as a backup for PAIR Analysts in subject matter expertise and supporting the fulfillment of data requests during times of high need Working with office management, determine and maintain a level of professional development that fits with personal career interests and motivationsEssential
40Be the expert developer on a small cross-functional team of PAIR Analysts in order to generate and automate BI Reports, quantitative analysis, dashboards/visualizations, data quality feedback loops/reports, and ad hoc reporting to support the decision making needs of the university; Replace routine manual processes and reports with stored procedures, SSIS packages and SQL Server Agent Jobs Strategically own and manage PAIR projects from beginning to end as the effective project manager in addition to being the expert analyst/BI developer on a small cross-functional team.Essential
40Support the technical coordination, design and implementation of reporting and data solutions that support PAIR’s short- and long-term information and analysis goals: • Facilitate database design collaboration sessions with PAIR Analysts and Subject Matter Experts across the university that can provide insight and background on relevant data sources • Provide recommendations and implement solutions to improve, simplify and automate reporting processes, data usage, data quality/integrity and data analysis • Create and deliver artifacts including but not limited to: business work flow diagrams, concept and physical data models, database design documentation, lineage and source to target mappings, data dictionary, and standard operating procedures for keeping PAIR data products up-to-date • Collaborate with PAIR Analysts to test, validate and review their data solutions to refine their work and provide helpful feedback to ensure quality assurance, validation, and optimization of data products • Provide technical program coordination to PAIR on medium and long duration projects that may span technical and non-technical aspects of the work performed by PAIREssential

The Office of Planning, Analysis, and Institutional Research (PAIR) at the University of Alaska Fairbanks is looking for an Analyst/BI Developer to join our team.  Reporting to the Director of PAIR, this position combines the traditional roles of an institutional research analyst and a database developer, while incorporating project management and business intelligence disciplines. We are seeking an exceptional team player who embraces UAF’s mission and six strategic goals.

This role will assist PAIR in facilitating a transition of business practices away from customized, manual data queries toward standardization and automation, with an emphasis on locating and resolving data quality issues and improving business processes. This is a great opportunity for someone with a few years of experience as an analyst, database developer, data modeler or other data architecture related role in a higher education setting.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Must be able to identify problems with the current business environment and develop business process improvements with practical implementation strategies that leverage both technical and business acumen.
  • Proven ability to conceptualize and communicate solutions to both business and IR partners, providing translation and connection between them.
  • Proficiency in SQL; on the job experience with collaborative table design to support reporting, statistical analysis and ad hoc requests; Strong knowledge of data structures and ability to efficiently query/transform data.
  • Ability to think big picture and dive deep into details; Excellent analytical, mathematical, and creative problem-solving skills, with keen attention to detail.
  • Highly self-motivated and directed, with an ability to bring enthusiasm and energy to foster a collaborative team environment.
  • Excellent listening and interpersonal skills; Ability to communicate ideas in both technical and user-friendly language; Strong negotiation, facilitation and consensus building skills; Good oral and written communication skills as well as group presentation skills.
  • Ability to conduct research into data quality issues and outliers without getting lost in the details.
  • Ability to quickly learn and incorporate new technologies.

Typical Experience:

  • Minimum three years experience as a SQL developer, data modeler or data architecture related role.
  • Minimum three years of work experience, preferably in higher education setting.
  • Experience with SQL Server Management Studio, SQL Server Integration Services, and Microsoft Power BI.
  • Visio (or other visual tool for producing conceptual models and business process flows).
  • Knowledge or experience using statistical analysis/machine learning tools (SAS, R, Python, etc.).
  • Direct experience with Banner Information Systems and Oracle Database Systems.
  • Technical program support experience helpful.

Required Education or Training:

Bachelor's Degree in: Management Information Systems, Data Analytics, or other information technology related field, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Other Special Skills and Knowledge:

Advanced skills in mathematics and logic. Demonstrated experience developing and validating data reports and data models for use by others. Advanced skill base in computer programming and programming concepts. Basic skills in operations research to include the application of linear programming, queuing theory, and model simulations. Demonstrated experience working in a team environment. Demonstrated experience working under pressure with frequent changes to reporting output in response to changes in reporting needs. Ability to self-motivate. Have a genuine interest in professional development and willingness to travel for conferences and training opportunities. Capacity for independent thought and critical analysis. Ability to be considerate of and sensitive to human factors present in discussing data and performance measures with end-users. An inherent understanding for flexibility in an ever changing world, a sunny disposition, and an uncanny sense of humor.
