Position Summary:

TRIO Upward Bound seeks a Teaching Assistant. This recruitment is open internally to current UA employees or those otherwise eligible to apply to internal postings.


100Assist with executing the 5-week TRIO Upward Bound Summer Academy and/or academic year classes/workshops. Assist with course design and instruction in area of expertise. Plan and facilitate icebreakers/team building activities, classroom lessons/activities, and provide general student engagement and support. Serve as an informal mentor to students, providing information related to the college-going process and postsecondary opportunities. Monitor student attendance, behavior and safety. Assist with data collection/reporting and program evaluation/assessment. Help make decisions about supply needs for instructors and students. Actively participate in training and other professional development. Communicate successes, challenges and concerns to program staff. Serve as a liaison to community partners and institutional departments. Other duties as assigned.Essential

Upward Bound (UB) is a federally-funded TRIO program that serves 120 limited-income and potential first-generation college students at Bartlett and West High Schools (60 students at each school). The program's mission is to assist students toward the goal of entering and completing postsecondary education. The program operates year-round, with services offered in the high schools during the school year and on the UAA campus in the summer. During the Summer Academy, students take academic classes, learn about colleges and careers, develop leadership skills, and more. Upward Bound is looking for dynamic employees that believe in the TRIO mission and are interested in supporting diverse youth who are goal driven and eager to pursue higher education.


Position requires the ability to work assigned hours and be dependable. Must possess excellent problem solving, organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills. Must exhibit excellent customer service skills and be able to work as a team. Must have ability to work independently with minimum supervision with high school students of varying abilities from a wide range of backgrounds. Must be able to take initiative. Must have ability to balance multiple student needs at once. Must have interest in working with a diverse group of students. Good computer skills are required. Because this position works with minors, successful candidates must consent to a third party background check and all results must be satisfactory as determined by the University.
