Position Summary:

The University of Alaska Southeast is currently seeking a motivated professional for the Coordinator for Disability and Counseling Services position who has a passion for providing the highest quality care in a higher education institution setting. This position will supervise a team of professionals engaged in providing health, wellness, counseling, and disability services to students, as well as providing direct services to students.

Duties:

20%Within the guidelines of the ADA and Regent's Policy, determine, consult, and implement appropriate academic and programmatic accommodations for all UAS students (Juneau, Ketchikan and Sitka) with documented disabilities each semester. Provide staff liaison services for students when appropriate and/or necessary. Work with Disability Services (DS) at UAA and UAF to build a consistent statewide approach to service delivery when necessary. Consult colleagues as needed for collaboration and consultation. Maintain confidential records of services provided to students. Obtain and utilize basic skills of academic advising and coordinate services with advising staff, housing staff, Care Team referrals. Coordinate service delivery with external partners such as REACH, SAIL, DVR, JAMHI, NAMI and others who are potential resources for disabled students. Prepare and participate in disability related training for new student and faculty orientations each year. Develop and coordinate programs that support and enhance the educational experience of students with disabilities (example: peer mentoring support).Essential
40%Counseling: Provide clinical, development and preventative counseling, from intake through assessment and release/referral, for students experiencing mental health concerns such as relationship conflicts, anxiety, depression, suicide, relationship violence, eating disorders, and psychoses. Provide short term solution focused and cognitive behavioral therapy. Assess and discriminate treatment and interventions, maintain compliance and ethical standards, confidentiality and documentation. Coordinate and offer group counseling (therapy, skill building and support groups) as appropriate to our student populations.Essential
40Coordinator of Health, Wellness, Counseling and Disability Services for UAS: In collaboration with the Dean of Students, supervise three professional staff: Health Center Physician’s Assistant (licensed), one part-time counselor (Licensed Clinical Social Worker or Licensed Professional Counselor) and one part-time disability services licensed staff member. Evaluate overall performance and set and assess annual goals in conjunction with the overall direction of UAS student needs. Develop and assess department policy and procedures regularly. Develop and implement a training program for new staff and seek ongoing training opportunities for continuing staff. Maintain licensure of professional staff and compliance to ethical responsibilities. Approve leave and manage schedules and coverage/backup for the departments. Conduct regular staff meetings to provide leadership and case consultation, and to develop program plans - meet with supervisor as needed to discuss counseling, health, and disability activities and services, report on progress, and elevate student needs and concerns as appropriate. Provide direction for an annual budget serving Health, Wellness, Counseling and Disability Services. Participation on the UAS Care Team, a Behavioral Intervention Team, a group of staff members from various departments across campus who meet regularly to assist students experiencing difficulty and to help ensure the safety of our campus. Responsible for following up on students assigned to counseling services for each open case. Crisis Management: Meet with students, staff and faculty when crises occur on campus- talk with students who are in a state of emotional or physical crisis - assess danger to self or others and take appropriate actions. Carry out suicide prevention and response activities including hospitalization referral when necessary. Work with other departments (e.g. Residence Life, Police) and community agencies (e.g. Hospital, AWARE Shelter). Coordinate after-hours support for mental health emergencies as needed and/or arrange for such support among counseling staff. Work with other support resources such as parents or community agencies. Act as a liaison between other campus departments and community services and the Student Resource Center to represent Health and Wellness Services. Seek opportunities for community engagement that will benefit UAS students. Ensure representation in strategic planning, retention, and student success efforts. Inform and guide faculty and staff regarding scope of services available. Provide training on services and support for the UAS community. Ensure representation for the following committees: Cultural Safety and Equity Committee (Chancellor appointed), Incident Management Team, Student Success and Retention Committee, Power & Privilege Symposium Planning Committee, UAS Food Pantry Committee, UAS Wellness Coalition. Coordinate and promote a wellness programming model that supports the academic success and well-being of UAS students. Combine best practices from the professional fields of Counseling, Disability Services and Health with knowledge of student needs at UAS. This includes but is not limited to promoting and supporting Safe Zone training, HIPAA training, Mental Health First Aid, cultural safety training, trauma informed training and other training for underrepresented student groups at UAS. Lead compliance officer and trainer for UAS on issues of legal compliance and a variety of disability related issues.Essential

The successful candidate should be able to perform ALL of the following functions at a pace and level of performance consistent with the actual job performance requirements.

Education & Experience

  1. Master's degree in Counseling, Psychology, Social Work or other related fields from an accredited program and three years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience is required.
  2. Appropriate state licensure and certification are preferred or the ability to get licensed in the next two years.
  3. Prior experience counseling at a college or university preferred.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  1. Ability to communicate effectively interpersonal and in writing within a culturally diverse institutional environment, be able to establish and maintain positive, collaborative relationships with students, faculty, and staff, serve as an effective team member as well as have the ability to function independently, lead, manage and prioritize multiple job assignments.
  2. Demonstrated effectiveness and experience supervising, instructing, and evaluating the work of subordinates.
  3. Mastery of counseling theory and techniques, consultation skills, crisis intervention theory and techniques, and clinical record keeping; training and experience in development and effective presentation of outreach and prevention programs; thorough knowledge of current ethical principles, practices, and standards of care for providing psychological services; human relations skills and knowledge of effective supervision methods; working knowledge of State of Alaska mental health and child/elder abuse Statutes; experience in developing clinical and operational protocols in the counseling setting.
  4. Knowledge of psychological testing instruments.
  5. Knowledge of and skills in the supervision of clinical work in mental health.
  6. Knowledge of mental health, suicide prevention, substance use/abuse assessment, experience in relationship issues, conflict management especially in roommate/residential living concerns, and community outreach.
  7. Knowledge of local, state and federal statutes and regulations as they apply to disability services, including but not limited to the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.
  8. Knowledge of assistive learning technology, including hardware and software for students with disabilities; knowledge of and ability to interpret the results of various assessments and diagnostic tools used to diagnose different types of disabilities and make recommendations for reasonable accommodations required; ability to create and conduct effective programming for students with diverse abilities is required.

Development and implementation of administrative policies and procedures.

Computer and other technology (e.g., Word, Excel, database management) proficiency in an office setting.
