Located in the Learning Commons, the goal of the Math Lab is to assist students at all levels to improve their math and reasoning skills. This is accomplished through one-on-one discussions of student work.
Student learning outcomes for tutoring focus on helping students to improve their understanding of math in the long term to build success as a foundation for developing increasingly higher level math skills.
The Math Lab promotes productive learning. Tutors individually dialogue with students about math concepts by answering questions as they arise, or by helping students locate additional resources. Tutors foster a climate in which students are encouraged to engage in the process of learning, in order to not only solve individual math problems, but to build confidence in the ability to improve problem-solving approaches.
The Math Lab is an open lab where tutors rotate from student to student after short sessions. Tutoring is by design intended to promote independent learning, so that students are able to progress over time.
- Provide math tutoring services to students
- Represent the Math Lab, the Learning Commons, and the University in a professional and inclusive manner.
- Help create a welcoming atmosphere in the Math Lab
- Adhere to academic integrity and privacy guidelines
- When appropriate, refer students to additional campus learning resources
- Communicate effectively with students, coworkers, and supervisors
- Participate in workshops and outreach events
- Attend trainings and meetings as scheduled
- Help maintain electronic records of student visits
- Restock supplies and materials, and help keep the Math Lab clean
- Report incidents or events as they occur to supervisors
- Other duties as assigned
Required Education and Experience:
- Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 with a 3.0 average in Math coursework
- Currently taking at least 6 credits
- Must have successfully completed at least one 200-level math course.
- Effective communication skills
- Capacity to work with students and diverse backgrounds
- Ability to work weekends and evenings.
Preferred Education and Experience:
- Prior tutoring experience preferred, but not required. Training provided upon hire.
- General knowledge of common software

This position will remain open until filled. Student Worker C $10.50/hour.
Note: As the Math Lab is open to community members, Math Tutors must be able to work with minors on mathematics (down to the Middle School level). One tutor may be selected to work in particular with this population and be funded through the Federal Workstudy program. Also, note that some tutors will be given the opportunity to tutor in High Schools in conjunction with the UAA TRIO Upward Bound program.
