Position Summary:

The Institute of Arctic Biology is seeking to hire a motivated individual to work as our Core Lab Coordinator for the Core Facility for Nucleic Acid Analysis (Genomics Core Lab).


10%Maintain detailed records of all income and expenses, including ongoing records of all services provided, consumables sold, repairs, and purchases. Process monthly billing of users and associated paperwork in coordination with the Institute of Arctic Biology fiscal office. Coordinate with the Core Lab Faculty Director and Steering Committee to oversee budgets and evaluate the need for new equipment purchases, repairs, and service contracts. Monitor consumption of supplies to ensure uninterrupted operation of the Core Lab instrumentation and general laboratory equipment. Order equipment and supplies as needed. Maintain detailed records and logs of all purchases. Meet regularly with Core Lab Faculty Director and with the Core Lab Steering Committee. Prepare information to present on the status of the Core Facility and an agenda outline. Use records of revenue and expenses to develop a projected fiscal plan to bring before the Core Lab Committee annually.Essential
15%Maintain Core Lab instrumentation. The Core Lab Coordinator should become familiar with all instruments, provide routine and preventative maintenance as needed and respond in an appropriate timeframe to instrument problems. The coordinator should ensure that service contracts are current and communicate with service providers as needed. The coordinator should also keep user logs of instrument use. 20%Communicate with and provide training to Core Lab users and to Core Lab assistant or intern. The coordinator should assist, advise, and train UAF faculty, postdocs, lab technicians, graduate students, undergrads, and others to use shared equipment and resources. Host and coordinate training sessions or seminars periodically for new equipment and methodologies. Keep users up to date on important developments via e-mail, meetings, and postings on the website. Provide one-on-one training and guidance to users when needed. Answer questions, assist in troubleshooting or solving problems with Core Lab equipment or related techniques or protocols. Act as a resource and help labs connect and network when they are performing similar research or protocols and facilitate solutions to a variety of problems. Lead tours of the Core Facility for middle/high school classes, undergraduate/graduate level classes, candidates for new faculty positions, visiting faculty, and other visitors. Maintain the website for the Genomics Core Lab, including information on all the services and instrumentation available, pricing, protocols for submitting samples as well as resources on lab techniques and protocols.Essential
25%Provide flex-technician services to principle investigators in support of funded projects. This may include basic research, molecular sample processing, assistance with educational programs, or other activities.Essential
30%Perform DNA sequencing services. The Core Lab Coordinator is responsible for performing DNA sequencing services using Illumina MiSeq and MinION platforms (and other future technologies) for users who submit samples. This entails advising users on appropriate methods and sample preparation guidelines, preparing libraries and quality control checks, performing sequence analyses, providing data to users, and troubleshooting as required.Essential

The Core Lab Coordinator is responsible for independently maintaining and overseeing the UAF Institute of Arctic Biology Genomics Core Lab (GCL) This includes performing DNA sequencing services, providing user training on shared-use instrumentation, advising users on molecular methods, budgeting and billing for operations and services, communicating with users regularly, coordinating shared space use, maintaining the Core Lab website, and performing occasional educational and outreach activities.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities:

Knowledge and theory molecular biology and molecular lab techniques ranging from basic to advanced.

Must be organized and able to keep detailed and accurate records.

Independently maintain and oversee the smooth operation of the Core Lab by making decisions about the following:Routine maintenance of instruments, trouble-shooting, scheduled and unscheduled maintenance by companies (OEM or third-party), scheduling of instruments, samples and projects for clients, resolve scheduling conflicts.

Keep detailed records of all expenses and income. Knowledge of basic book-keeping and mathematical skills. Use records to develop a projected fiscal plan for covering salaries, instrument maintenance/contracts, and supplies.

Keep records of all services and consumables sold and conduct monthly billing of clients.

Order supplies and consumables to maintain the lab.

Help users troubleshoot. Give help, training and advice for instrumentation, lab techniques, and instrument data acquisition software.

Schedule and organize training seminars with companies.

Organize and lead tours of the Core Lab for middle/high school classes, university classes and other visitors. Organize training modules for educational programs.

Conduct molecular biology research semi-independently.

Attend appropriate professional society meetings (e.g. Association of Biomolecular Resource Facilities) to network with reps and genomics core coordinator/director/technician colleagues.

Must be comfortable enough with computers, software, lab techniques and lab instrumentation to troubleshoot. Basic computer skills (Excel, Word, etc.). Skills with LINUX and other scripting/coding languages desirable.

Ability to communicate effectively and work well with facility users who have diverse educational backgrounds and experience levels in Molecular Biology.

Strong molecular biology experience and training. Knowledge of next-generation DNA sequencing technologies. Knowledge of currently used bioinformatics tools.

Required Experience, Education, and Training: 

Minimum of M.S. in Biological Sciences, Chemistry or related field and / or equivalent experience. One or more years of experience with instruments used in the Genomics Core Lab and with comparable molecular techniques. Applicants with Ph.D. in Biological Sciences, Chemistry or related fields are also encouraged to apply. 

This is a full-time, Grade 78, minimum $23.60/hr, DOE, 9-month position complete with a competitive salary and UA employee benefits package.
