Position Summary:

The communication center coach position supports the mission by assisting students in their public speaking assignments and activities. They provide support for students in a wide range of ways, including: outline support, audience analysis, organization, structure, visual aids, and delivery.

Duties:

100Provide coaching services regarding effective public speaking skills to students Represent the Communication Center, the Learning Commons, and UAA in a professional and inclusive manner Help create a welcoming atmosphere in the Communication Center Adhere to academic integrity and privacy guidelines When appropriate, refer students to additional campus learning resources Communicate effectively with students, coworkers, and supervisors Participate in workshops and outreach events Attend trainings and meetings as scheduled Help maintain electronic records of student visits Restock supplies and materials, and help keep the Communication Center clean Report incidents or events as they occur to supervisors Other duties as assignedEssential

The Learning Commons (LC) provides educational support and opportunities to all UAA students. The LC offers services to promote student success including: tutoring, academic coaching, an information desk, seasonal programs and workshops, an open computer lab, group meeting spaces, and an open study space. The LC is located in Sally Monserud Hall, on the west side of campus.

The mission of the Communication Center is to help students achieve confidence and success in their public speaking endeavors.

The communication center coach position supports the mission by assisting students in their public speaking assignments and activities. They provide support for students in a wide range of ways, including: outline support, audience analysis, organization, structure, visual aids, and delivery.

Job Duties Include:

  • Provide coaching services regarding effective public speaking skills to students
  • Represent the Communication Center, the Learning Commons, and UAA in a professional and inclusive manner
  • Help create a welcoming atmosphere in the Communication Center
  • Adhere to academic integrity and privacy guidelines
  • When appropriate, refer students to additional campus learning resources
  • Communicate effectively with students, coworkers, and supervisors
  • Participate in workshops and outreach events
  • Attend trainings and meetings as scheduled
  • Help maintain electronic records of student visits 
  • Restock supplies and materials, and help keep the Communication Center clean
  • Report incidents or events as they occur to supervisors 
  • Other duties as assigned

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Sophomore, Junior, or Senior standing at UAA, and currently taking at least 6 credits
  • Minimum of one (1) year (at 20 hours per week) of work/volunteer experience
  • 3.0 Cumulative GPA
  • Completed oral communication GER course (COMM 111 or COMM 241)
  • Working knowledge of effective public speaking techniques
  • Effective communication skills
  • Capacity to work with students with diverse backgrounds

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • At least one semester of your higher level learning completed at UAA
  • Preference may be given to full-time students and/or students eligible for work study
  • Work/volunteer experience in a university setting
  • Customer service experience
  • General knowledge of common software
