Position Summary:

University of Alaska Fairbanks Geophysical Institute is seeking a motivated and energetic postdoctoral scholar to join our sea ice research group. As a part of the leading US institution for Arctic research we are one of the most active ice research groups in the country. The successful candidate will be part of a team of scientists and engineers developing new ways to observe the Polar Regions.

Duties:

100100 % Sea Ice Research Work as part of an interdisciplinary team to carry-out model-based development of the EM sub-system for measuring sea ice thickness using EM induction principles. The overall system will also include laser and radar altimeters and must be capable of being integrated into long-range Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS). Publish findings in peer-reviewed journals.Essential

The sea ice research group at the Geophysical Institute applies remote sensing, model, and field-based methods to study sea ice and its role in the Earth system. This position includes the opportunity to join a team of engineers and scientists developing a new sensor for measuring sea ice thickness across the Arctic. The sensor will use Airborne Electromagnetic (AEM) sounding and be designed to integrate into a long-range Unmanned Aerial System (UAS). The project will involve a model-based design and culminate with field testing over Arctic sea ice.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: 

Knowledge of and experience in electromagnetic systems and signal processing.

Knowledge and ability to work with embedded systems design and applied geophysics.

Ability to publish in peer reviewed journals and be able to conduct multidisciplinary research.

Ability to pay close attention to detail, and work in n organized manned.

Ability to follow instructions and work without close supervision.

Sufficient relevant experience to contribute significantly to projects.

Experience with the use of computers and other appropriate equipment to conduct the research proposed.

Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

Required Education and Experience: 

PhD degree in Electrical Engineering, Remote Sensing, Geophysics or a related field and 2 years of research in a relevant scientific field.

Salary Information:

This position is a full-time, exempt, term-funded, Grade 40 with salary commensurate with experience.

Non-Represented Staff (Probationary Period):

Pursuant to University Regulation 04.07.020, new employees of the University are employed in an at-will probationary status for the first six months of employment.  During the probationary period, employment may be terminated for no reason or any reason.  Promoted employees also serve a probationary period with limited rights of retreat.

Term Positions:

This position is a term-funded position through June 30, 2020, and is reviewed annually for contract renewal at the University's discretion.
