Successful applicants will receive eighteen months of salary support. Key attributes of successful applications include the following: (i) an identified faculty sponsor (ii) a well-defined project idea developed in collaboration with the sponsor and potentially, other university researchers and/or a private or public sector partner; and (iii) evidence that the applicant has strong potential for a successful research career.  Evidence of research success should include peer-reviewed publications or evidence of other scholarly/creative activity as well as letters of support. Verification of ongoing or past collaborations are encouraged and may include the private-sector, public-private partnerships or state agencies as well as university and federal research organizations.

To be eligible an applicant must have received their doctoral degree between January 1, 2015, and June 1, 2020. As a condition of the award, successful applicants must be able to present a certified copy of their diploma or a certified letter from the appropriate university official stating that they have completed all of the requirements for their degree. Successful applicants must have completed their final thesis and have co-authored at least two peer-reviewed publications based on original research, or have equivalent accomplishments in a creative or scholarly discipline, prior to being offered their UAF Centennial Postdoctoral appointment.  Publications may be "in-press".  Applicants do not need to have received their degree prior to applying, as long as the above requirements are met prior to appointment offer. It is also expected that candidates will have a command of the English language.

Recipients of awards may initiate their study and research period on or after July 1, 2020. Recipients of the awards will receive a base annual salary of at least $55,000.  Post-docs can extend their term of employment by securing additional funding, which could be in collaboration with faculty (some faculty sponsors may already have additional funding).  All appointees are eligible for the benefits received by full-time post-doctoral fellows. Five awards are anticipated for this recruitment. Scholars are chosen through a highly competitive process. As such, these appointments will carry special recognition.

Application Requirements:

The following are required for the application:

  • a current CV or resume that shows the applicant’s educational background, research and work experiences, publications and other scholarly/creative activities;
  • a concise statement (no longer than two pages single-spaced) that (i) describes the applicant’s research interests, focusing on those that the applicant would like to pursue at UAF, (ii) addresses how the planned research creates opportunities for collaborations including within University of Alaska campuses and/or between UAF and the private sector, (iii) identifies how the proposed research complements the faculty sponsor’s research program, and (iv) outlines more general career plans and how a postdoctoral position at UAF would complement the applicant’s existing experience and future goals;
  • a confidential letter of support, written within the last year, from the UAF faculty sponsor addressing the applicant’s qualifications and how the applicant’s research would complement the faculty member’s research program. The applicant must ask the sponsor to submit the letter directly to uaf-gi-hr@alaska.edu. HR will not contact the references to request letters;
  • a one page abstract of the applicant's doctoral dissertation;
  • three confidential recommendation letters, which may include a letter of support or collaboration outlining the relevance of the proposed research for the private sector or private-public partnerships. The applicant must ask the reference writers to submit the letters directly to uaf-gi-hr@alaska.edu. HR will not contact the references to request letters;
  • preference will be given to applicants with multidisciplinary proposals.

Guidance for Confidential External Reference Writers:

Letters of Recommendation are a key factor in the UAF Centennial Postdoctoral decision. We recognize the considerable time and thought required of professionals in providing letters of recommendation for postdoctoral fellows. We anticipate the UAF selection process will be very competitive and rigorous. It is helpful if the letter of recommendation provides an indication of the relative ranking of the candidate within his/her peer group. The following information should be included in the reference letters:

  • How long and in what capacity do you know this candidate?
  • What is the potential for the applicant to succeed in research, scholarly/creative activities?
  • How does this candidate approach challenges? Give an example if possible.
  • Would you hire this candidate?

Awards will be made on a competitive basis to recent recipients of Ph.D. degrees (awarded January 1, 2015, and June 1, 2020). A multi-disciplinary group is reviewing applications for final selection. Guidance for Faculty Sponsor Confidential letter:

  • The Faculty sponsor letter should describe how the applicant’s research plan benefits and complements the faculty sponsor’s research program.
  • It should also describe departmental support in regards to facilities, supplies, equipment, and travel.

Salary Information:

This position is full-time, exempt, term-funded, Grade 00_40, recipients will receive a base annual salary of at least $55,000.

Non-Represented Staff (Probationary Period):

Pursuant to University Regulation 04.07.020, new employees of the University are employed in an at-will probationary status for the first six months of employment.   During the probationary period, employment may be terminated for no reason or any reason.  Promoted employees also serve a probationary period with limited rights of retreat.

Term Positions:

This position is an 18-month term-funded position.
