Position Summary:

UAA School of Social Work is recruiting a Term Assistant Professor of Social Work Education in Child Welfare to bring instructional competencies to the curriculum in generalist and advanced generalist social work practice, to contribute to the Alaska Child Welfare Workforce Development Project, and to advance innovations in child welfare education.

Duties:

1001. Teach content in child welfare. 2. Coordinate Inter-professional Certificate in Child Welfare. 3. The School of Social Work has accredited BSW and MSW programs designed to prepare practitioners to meet the social service needs of a large, frontier, multi-cultural state. The MSW delivers instruction through distance delivery to students living in Alaska with practicum experiences available in the students’ home communities. The BSW is primarily campus based, with some courses offered rotationally in a distance format. The School is committed to recruiting and retaining a diverse faculty and student body. Purpose of Position
This position will increase the capacity of the UAA School of Social Work to educate social work professionals at undergraduate and graduate levels for child welfare practice in the state of Alaska. Alaska experiences elevated social indicators suggesting considerable need to expand and deepen its capacities for strengthening families and for addressing the needs of families and their children when neglect and/or abuse occurs.
 
In partnership with the School of Social Work Director and the BSW Program Coordinator, the position will work to advance child welfare curriculum. The incumbent will engage in teaching and instruction of social work students to advance their values, knowledge, and core competencies, preparing them for practice in public, nonprofit, and tribal child welfare. The incumbent will also create, sustain and strengthen field education in public and tribal child welfare practice through instruction of social work students.
 
The incumbent of the position will work closely with state, nonprofit, and tribal providers of child welfare services to strengthen social work education in child welfare and will facilitate implementation of new educational programs in social work, prioritizing well‐experienced child welfare professionals seeking academic degrees at undergraduate or graduate professional levels. The incumbent supports the implementation of the Interprofessional Certificate in Child Welfare, and the BSW emphasis in child welfare.
 
Core Responsibilities:
  1. Build strong and positive working relationships with staff members in state, nonprofit, and tribal child welfare, and come to understand their workforce development needs
  2. In partnership with the principals of the Alaska Child Welfare Workforce Development Project (UAA School of Social Work, Alaska Office of Children’s Services, and Alaska Child Welfare Academy), ensure the currency of educational competencies guiding student development in social work practice in child welfare
  3. Teach content, modules, and courses in social work practice in child welfare
  4. In partnership with state, nonprofit, and tribal child welfare organizations, create relevant and high quality practicum experiences for students in child welfare and social work practice
  5. Serve as the school’s practicum liaison for undergraduate or graduate students in child welfare
  6. When needed, serve as practicum instructor for undergraduate or graduate social work students in child welfare
  7. Participate in the marketing of the Interprofessional Certificate in Child Welfare across the University Alaska system, Ilisagvik College, and Alaska Pacific University, and recruit students to the certificate program
  8. Track, sustain, and retain students who enroll in the Interprofessional Certificate in Child Welfare
  9. Recruit and engage students in the BSW child welfare emphasis and teach relevant electives, structure practicum experiences, and facilitate capstone experiences of students who select the child welfare emphasis
  10. Build internal awareness of the BSW committee within the UAA School of Social Work to understand the workforce needs of employers of child welfare personnel
  11. Work closely with the school director and BSW program coordinator to advance resource development supporting social work education in child welfare
Supervision and Workload:
The position will serve as a faculty member of the UAA School of Social Work and will be responsible to the school’s director. The position will receive collaborative consultative guidance from the school’s BSW program coordinator, and will work closely with the director. The incumbent will have an active workload emphasizing teaching and instruction, and other instructional activities, and will focus service on the advancement of child welfare education within community and provider organizations, including public, nonprofit, and tribal entities.
 
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
  • Strong Interprofessional and communications skills, particularly within group situations
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively as an instructor within diverse educational forums
  • Conversant in use of technologies for distant delivery of educational content
  • Strong knowledge base of social work practice education
  • Knowledge and skills in field education within undergraduate and graduate social work programs
  • Documented evidence of building and sustaining strong community‐university partnerships
  • Commitment to and the ability to work effectively within the scope of the College of Health mission
  • Skill in educating social work students about equity and inequity across the life course
  • Strong written and oral presentation skills
  • Strong computer literacy to include software and tools for assessment and evaluation
  • Knowledge of social work theory and practice and its transmission within educational contexts
  • Ability to work effectively in faculty teams
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development
  • Capacity to work with community partners in the integration of social work practice within agency child welfare programs in tribal, state government, and/or nonprofit settings
Required Experience:
  • Minimum of three years post‐Masters social work practice experience
  • Five years of experience in child welfare practice, supervision, or administration

Preferred:

  • Experience as an adjunct instructor or practicum instructor
  • Experience with and commitment to Alaska Native, American Indian, Hawaiian Native and/or other diverse populations
  • Experience in addressing social issues facing Alaska, particularly those affecting children and families
Typical Education or Training:
Master of Social Work degree from a CSWE‐accredited program or Ph.D. in Social Work or comparable field.
 
Preferred:
Licensure in social work practice or licensure eligible.
