100This position indirectly reports to the Director of Infrastructure Services in the UAA IT Services department. The goals of this reporting relationship are: Enhanced bi-directional communication between embedded IT units and ITS to better align IT related initiatives and operations throughout UAA. Delegation of certain permissions and authorities from IT Services to this position. Formalizing a central IT point of contact in the functional department or community campus. The primary supervisor retains all responsibilities for directing work assignments and workload, annual reviews, disciplinary actions, hiring and other supervisory duties. This position must meet all information technology requirements of the campus by coordinating and implementing a shared information management strategy across multiple university stakeholders. Leads campus technology support for staff, faculty, and students and ensures team performance maintains established service standards. Performs Tier II troubleshooting and performs highly technical hands-on hardware and software tasks. Serves as a strategic advisor to executive management.

Evaluates systems; projects needs; leads campus technology security and incident response; reviews and authorizes the selection of equipment, vendor products or services; develops budgets and monitors expenditures. Reviews output, project reports, systems documentation, service requests, and other information to evaluate systems performance, systems operations, and requirements for upgrades. Consults with users to identify technology requirements and sets priorities according to campus and university needs and policies.

Guides and manages staff in the development, implementation and administration of technology services. Directs staff activities in reviewing and maintaining the various technology services and practices. Serves as primary spokesperson for information management; negotiates contracts and services by coordinating support of hardware, software, telecommunications, and training with external vendors, service providers, and government agencies as well as across IT and UA departments and campuses. Initiates Service Level Agreements (SLAs) with providers and monitors and assures performance of related contracts and system upgrades.

Develops annual employee, and student worker, mentoring and work plans. Coordinates IT staff technical training. Makes hiring decisions, evaluates performance, provides staff feedback and administers corrective action when necessary.

Is the primary supervisor of The Director of Campus Technology Services retains all responsibilities for directing work assignments and workload, annual reviews, disciplinary actions, hiring and other supervisory duties. The primary supervisor may solicit input from the indirect supervisor regarding these efforts at their discretion. 

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Advanced knowledge of operation and maintenance of networks and network communication systems - including WAN/LAN, high-speed networks, public telecommunications, internet and other network technologies.
  • Knowledge of hardware and software troubleshooting, methods of installing and maintaining network systems/infrastructure.
  • Knowledge of cabling standards and installation standards for networks.
  • Knowledge of microcomputers, operating systems, and a wide variety of applications.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft server environment, Active Directory, and various other campus network services.
  • Strong customer service, communication, organizational, and personnel management skills.

Required Experience:

  • Minimum of 3 recent years with LAN technologies which includes at least 1 year of experience with Microsoft Server environments and server administration.
  • Three years of work experience with network security (can substitute for formal training), SANS certification preferred. Experience with VMWare preferred.
  • Management and Budgetary experience.

Typical Education or Training:

Minimum of Associates Degree in an IT related field or an equivalent combination of training and experience. CISCO Certified Network Associate (CCNA) training (or experience) is required.
