Position Summary:

University of Alaska Fairbanks is seeking an Executive Director of University Advancement (EDUA) to provide strategic and dynamic leadership in the areas of Development, Alumni Relations and University Relations, working closely with the chancellor's cabinet and members of the university community. The EDUA replaces the Director of Development position. The Executive Director of University Advancement will provide leadership and direction in all areas of university advancement including the development, implementation and evaluation of UAF’s fundraising efforts, donor relations, alumni affairs and engagement, marketing, communications and public relations strategies and activities. This position will be responsible for building and maintaining strong relationships with key stakeholders including alumni, benefactors, students, faculty, staff and the broader community in advancing the university’s overall mission of research, teaching and public service. This position will report to the UAF chancellor and serve as a member of the chancellor’s core cabinet.


Build upon positive internal and external relationships with key constituencies including donors, prospective donors, alumni, community members, students and prospective students, faculty, staff, elected officials, the business community and other partners to more effectively tell the UAF story.Essential
Lead in the development, implementation and evaluation of an annual integrated advancement plan that is based on UAF strategic goals and ensure the university leadership vision is being met.Essential
Lead UAF's fundraising strategies, as identified by the chancellor and university departments through a donor-centric model based on UAF's strategic goals. Serve as chief liaison with the University of Alaska Foundation. Collaborate with advancement teams across the UA System. Serve as a strategic advisor to the chancellor and leadership team, including deans and directors of UAF units.Essential
Oversee and ensure best practices in communications, marketing, branding, advertising and media relations; ensure best practices in all aspects of fundraising, including major gifts, annual giving, planned gifts, donor cultivation, solicitation and stewardship; and provide leadership for robust alumni engagement, including events and activities that foster affinity and support for the university.Essential
Oversee effective internal and external communications, provide leadership to advancement personnel (development, alumni and university relations) and oversee programs, services, budgets and policies within an integrated advancement unit. Manage a team of professional, administrative and technical support personnel.Essential


This position requires high level written and oral communications and interpersonal skills; attention to detail, strong analytical and organizational skills and demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects with competing deadlines. A comprehensive understanding of advancement as a functional area including fundraising, stewardship, donor relations, data management and metrics; alumni engagement strategies to include event management, online engagement, and mentorship; strategic communications best practices to include media relations, strategic planning, crisis communications, brand management, marketing principles, writing and editing, graphic identity standards, social media, and AP style. This position requires excellent customer service skills, a commitment to continuous improvement and the ability to communicate effectively with a wide variety of audiences to include technical and non-technical staff. This position requires a high degree of confidentiality and the handling of tough issues with tact and diplomacy.

Required Experience:

Successful candidates will have at least 10 years of leadership experience in marketing, fundraising, promotion, public relations, strategic planning, and public speaking. Documented experience in executive level management requiring supervision of technical and non-technical staff, financial accountability and administration.

Preferred Experience:

Preference will be given to candidates that also display one or more of the following:

  • Experience working within higher education
  • Fundraising certification (CFRE)
  • Public relations certification (APR)
  • History of activity in CASE (Council for Advancement and Support of Education)
  • Major fundraising campaign experience

Required Education or Training:

Bachelor’s degree required, master’s degree preferred in Business Administration, Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, Management, Public Administration or related fields.
