Position Summary:

The purpose of the position will be to conduct operational work within the DOE-Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) program, the Alaska Mesonet network, and to participate in other ongoing projects in the fields of atmospheric sciences. The job will suit a technician with an interest in atmospheric field data acquisition and a strong technical and IT background, and the ability to work outdoors in remote arctic conditions. This position will support field measurements using state of the art atmospheric instrumentation, support instrument deployment and related computer hardware and software, and help with the data transfer processes. The work includes ongoing tool development to control data quality and operational maintenance reporting. Familiarity with Unix and Windows operating systems are required; the work includes development and maintenance of operational tools such as databases and code for processing large amounts of measurement data. Successful candidates are expected to have a general mechanical aptitude and skills to troubleshoot computing and network problems associated with field instrumentation. *YOU MUST BE A US CITIZEN AND PROVIDE THIS CONFIRMATION IN YOUR RESUME OR COVER LETTER.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: - Ability to work with technical instrumentation in cold environments.
- Ability to troubleshoot hardware and software.
- Understanding of advanced computer programming and administration applications.
- Familiarity with Unix/Linux and Windows operating systems, and data transfer protocols.
- Experience with database programming and maintenance.
- Good mathematical perceptivity is expected.
- Knowledge of computer architecture and networks, database and web design, and processing of large data sets.
Preferred Experience & Education:
Three years of experience as programmer and systems administrator.
Required Experience & Education:

Two years college coursework in natural sciences with interests in atmospheric sciences. Two years of experience in a field relevant to natural sciences or a combination of training and experience.

Experience in working in remote locations, sometimes in extreme cold or adverse conditions.

A valid driver's license and clean driving record in compliance with UA Safe Driving Criteria.

Salary Information:

This position is full-time, Grade 77, term-funded, non-exempt, 12-month position complete with a competitive salary and UA employee benefits package. New hires will be placed on the UA staff salary schedule, based on education and experience.
