Position Summary:
The Alaska Satellite Facility (ASF) of the Geophysical Institute (GI) at the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) is searching for one talented and dedicated staff member to act as Ground Station Engineers. ASF downlinks, processes, archives, and distributes remote-sensing data to scientific users around the world. ASF's mission is to make remote-sensing data accessible. This has many aspects, including promoting, facilitating, and participating in the advancement of remote sensing in order to support national and international Earth science research, field operations, and commercial remote-sensing applications that benefit society. Duties:

10Communication:
Providing adequate prior notification for planned impacts to normal operations.
Providing follow up notification for planned and unplanned impacts to normal operations.
Recording and reporting appropriate and timely levels of detail regarding the status of projects and work performed.
Providing cross-training to ASF staff.
Serving as a technical interface for visitors, vendors, scientists and other staff.Essential
10Project Management Duties:
Coordinating and organizing complex projects with a broad scope to ensure the reliable completion of deliverable requirements in a predictable and timely manner.
Utilize resources, tracks project progress and communicates status appropriately.Essential
30Technical Projects to expand ASF Ground Station capabilities:
Working on multiple systems and assignments effectively at the same time.
Performing additions or modifications to the operational Ground Station systems with consideration to minimizing impact to normal operations and ensuring maximum reliability of ASF Ground Station systems.
Configuring, testing and deploying new systems or significant improvements to existing ASF Ground Station systems.
Developing documentation in concert with project development to ensure operational integrity and maintainability of Ground Station systems.Essential
40Operational Duties:
Performing system maintenance, software tuning, installing upgrades, troubleshooting and modifying systems to support existing and/or added features and functionality of ASF Ground Station software subsystems.
Maintaining current technical skills and readily learns emerging technologies while maintaining a detailed functional knowledge of ASF Ground Station systems.
Maintaining security related documentation, and address security related decisions and policies to ensure obligatory compliance, and ground station security related concerns.
Assisting end users regarding ASF ground station systems and supported end user applications.
Available periodically for ground station systems on call support for 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Create new documentation and update existing documentation to reflect modifications and existing ASF ground station systems.Essential

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: |
- Hands-on experience in RF/Analogue design
- Experience in satellite RF communications architecture
- Excellent verbal and technical writing skills
- Demonstrated advanced analytical problem-solving, troubleshooting, and critical thinking skills.
- System administration skills and/or software engineering skills and/or system engineering skills.
- Experience with industry-standard best practices & methods for security and/or software engineering skills
- Experience deploying computer hardware and/or software systems
- Ability to work well with others and act as a technical lead in a team environment

Required Education or Training: |
- Minimum 4 years of progressively responsible experience with RF software or hardware engineering, systems administration, software development or systems engineering.
- Bachelors Degree in Electrical/Electronics Engineering or related technical field or equivalent experience
- Valid Driver's license. Clean driving record that is in compliance with UA policy requirements.

Salary Information: |
This position is full-time, Grade 81, term-funded, exempt, 12-month position complete with a competitive salary and UA employee benefits package. New hires will be placed on the UA staff salary schedule, based on education and experience.
