Position Summary:
Community Service Officers (CSOs) are part-time student employees. The position consists of patrolling campus buildings and grounds, securing rooms and labs as required. CSOs provide security escorts and vehicle assists as well as supporting sworn police officers with various non-confrontational duties.
Duties:
100-Monitor University buildings and users. Perform interior and exterior security checks of all buildings in assigned area, noting discrepancies involving security or safety.
-Perform customer service duties, answering inquiries in person, as well as via phone and email.
-Operate office equipment and computers, including digital fingerprinting.
-Drive CSO vehicle during shift to perform duties.
-Report violations of state laws and University policies.
-Assist University staff, students and visitors as needed.
-Assist dispatcher center, police officers, and other duties as assigned.Essential

Community Service Officers (CSOs) are part-time student employees, but may work up to 40 hours during summer and breaks. Although many CSOs are Criminal Justice majors, all interested students are strongly encouraged to apply if they are interested in serving the UAF community. CSOs must be 18 years of age or older. Applicants must have three years of good driving history. Successful applicants must pass a complete background check, a basic physical test, and an oral interview.
Applicants must wear a uniform and be able to work at least 15 hours per week on a regular basis. CSOs can be assigned to any shift during the week, scheduled around class availability, and are required to be able to work nights, weekends, and holidays. CSOs can work during the summer and semester breaks, but are not required to do so.
The position consists of patrolling campus buildings and grounds, securing rooms and labs as required. CSOs provide security escorts and vehicle assists as well as supporting sworn police officers with various non-confrontational duties. This position requires driving of the UAF Police Department's CSO vehicle during assigned work hours. CSOs are not police officers and do not confront violent individuals or place themselves in dangerous situations. This position does require CSOs to work alone; however, they are always in radio contact with UAF police officers. CSOs will rotate through student dispatcher training as part of their duties and will be required to work in the dispatch center as needed.Per police department policy, CSO cannot hold a secondary job in the University system, including teaching assistant positions.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: |
Applicants must be able to clearly enunciate and communicate. Applicants must have good observational skills and computer skills. Applicants must be able to work mornings, nights, weekends, and holidays as scheduled. Must be able to safely operate a motor vehicle, adhering to all applicable laws, statutes and policies and maintaining a clean driving record. |
Typical Experience: |
Must have three years of driving experience. No more than two moving violations or 5 assessed points on license.

Required Education or Training: |
High school diploma or GED. Must be a current UA student, enrolled in 6 credit hours, and maintain a 2.0 gpa. A valid Alaska Drivers License with a good driving history is required for employment and must be maintained during entire employment. Once hired, CSOs must successfully complete a training program and obtain state of Alaska APSIN clearance within 30 days.

Salary Information: |
This is a part-time, student employee position, $15.26 per hour (Student Assistant 2, step 16)
CSO's working over the summer and living in UAF Residence Halls may be eligible for a housing allowance.
